At the beginning of the 20th Century pleasure craft began to replace the traditional fishing fleets on the Blackwater as day visitors from the East End of London found the delights of a trip to the coast.

The beginning of the 20th century saw the rise of leisure sailing and the opening of the Promenade Park which today attracts 500,000 visitors a year.
