Colchester Castle

After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror ordered castles to be built throughout England. Colchester was one of the sites chosen and work began in 1076.

COLCHESTER CASTLE

The castle was built around the ruins of the colossal Temple of Claudius, using Roman temple vaults as its base. It was built mainly of material from Roman ruins.

CASTLE ROOF

During building the castle came under threat from King Cnut of Denmark, then again in 1216 from King John. By 1350 the castle was mainly used as a Prison.
