Colours of the Arctic

Today's report: Arctic fauna adds colour | White whales

Arctic fauna adds colour

The team settle in a fjord north of Longyearbyen following an easy passage from the walrus site. It's a relief to go from their usual black and white dives to the riotous colour of a fauna dive.

It's now baking hot 't-shirt and shorts' weather at 78°N.

White whales

Philippe explains the remarkable abilities of the beluga whale and why they are dubbed the canaries of the sea. Belugas have adapted to their environment in unique ways, including a bulbous sac on the tops of their heads called a melon, apparently designed to focus sound and locate breathing holes in the ice.
