Welcome to the ice edge

Expedition leader Paul Rose reports on preparations for a second test dive, this time from a fjord north of Longyearbyen. It coincides with World Oceans Day, and a dramatic change in their environment as the Lance, temporarily parked, sits surrounded by fast ice.

Shakedown ice dive

Perfect conditions and with a glacier backdrop, the first ice dive is a success for Paul, Tooni, Philippe and Lucy. Their confidence is growing and the excitement is showing as the four presenters break the ice barrier.

Polar bear patrol

Whenever the dive team are busy underwater, a safety guide is keeping a watchful eye on the icy landscape for roaming polar bears. The size and strength of this Arctic predator make them a serious threat to the team.
