Rachel's Sing Live diary: 3
Everyone sings better after a tea break!
Everyone sings better after a tea break!

We are now into February, which can only mean one thing ... 4 weeks until showtime!

The weeks have flown by since the launch on 7 December. Although this may seem quite a frightening thought, I feel things are going well.

Since I last wrote, I found out that I haven’t been chosen for a solo part this time. I was a little disappointed, but hey, you can’t win ‘em all! I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those who have been successful – good Luck to you all!

Since Christmas, progress has been quick. From the beginning of the year we’ve experienced some awful weather, especially two Thursdays ago when we had terrible blizzards! But it’ll take more than a bit of snow to stop us and rehearsals went ahead as usual…..albeit with a rather depleted group!

Back to normal last Thursday though and it’s sounding good! We tackled two new songs in the repertoire, ‘New Music’ and ‘Ragtime’, both from the musical Ragtime. This was a pleasant change and quite a difference from phantoms, gang warfare and ‘crawling to Daddy’ (you'll understand this if you come to the concert!).

We also sang through ‘The Rose’. With all four parts together, the lyrics and tunes sounded beautiful and a feeling of relaxation descended on the group. We quickly snapped out of that by finishing off with a hearty rendition of Rhythm of Life. I’m sure we are asked to sing this faster every time we practice! However, the speed adds to the vitality of the words and rhythmical beat.

Over the last couple of weeks, for some of the songs, we have been asked to ‘close your books!’ and sing them from memory! It seems that these three little words strike fear into everyone.

However, I think the group as a whole was pleasantly surprised at how much we all remembered. We sing quite a few from memory now and I feel it is much easier. You are able to follow Gary’s lead much better and it enables you to really think about the words and the true meaning of the songs.
