The evil that men do

Every week, BBC Tees will be putting a question, or topic, to members of some of the different faiths around the Teesside area to gather their wisdom and maybe prompt us all to think about life in a different way.

THE QUESTION:

"How do we make sense of the extremes of evil and greatness that human beings are capable of? We have learned recently about the horrific violence in Kenya, and at the same time, we have seen the nobility of those working to feed and shelter the thousands who have fled the killing."

Michael Wright, Quaker, Middlesbrough Council of Faiths.

"We cannot take any comfort in thinking that such behaviour is just not how people like us would behave. There are too many accounts in the last 100 years, two world wars, and examples of cruel and evil behaviour from the nazi concentration camps, the communist gulags, and the treatment of hostages,to water torture in American prison camps, with the knowledge and support of our own security people, for us not to recognize that. "

Tony Penketh, Middlesbrough Spiritualist Church

"Some of us are fortunate enough to live in a loving and caring environment with family and friends who offer help and guidance when it is needed, provide us with a home, food, clothing, encourage us in education and personal development, and support us in times of need. This does not mean that we are necessarily raised in a materially wealthy situation, but more importantly, one in which consideration, love and kindness prevail."

As you said, Tony "some of us." Religious is often middle in this country. Especially C of e. Different manners keep classes apart. I know people who are only happy drinking in posh pubs and vice versa. Ditto cafes etc. So crack our class system befor you crack the world. Who said "let them eat olives" its modern Jonty

The evil that men do is ultimately down to one thing, sin. Of course people do not like the word sin but it is universal. Every person is a sinner by birth, by nature andby choice. Is there an answer? Yes, Jesus Christ is the answer. He said that the human heart is corrupted and he needs a new heart by the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit. There is no salvation apart from Jesus Christ and only in the new birth will men's sinful hearts be changed.

Jonty Lincoln
Life would not be the drama it is; if we humans were not getting up to all sorts of things nice and nasty. Jonty
