FaithYou are in: Tees > Faith > Man about town ![]() Tom at work in Binns Man about townIf you see a man in a dog collar in Binns, he's not buying his shopping, as he's actually at work. Andy Byng is the town centre chaplain for Middlesbrough and is currently visiting stall holders, offices and department stores like Binns. "As an industrial chaplain, I visit people in their places of work and talk to them, and if they want to speak to me about a problem or issue,we arrange to meet in their free time." Andy also officiates at Linthorpe Road Methodist church, but the believes that church doesn't need to be the focus of many people's faith.
"Instituionalised religion as we know it is dying, but there has been a surge in interest in spiritual things like alternative therapy, as people in the 21st century still believe in God but often feel that going to church isn't neccessary." "Some people think they they have to talk about religion with me, but this isn't the case." "My job is about going into the community and talking to people and I enjoy meeting them." "People are often pleasantly surprised that God and someone who works for him is interested in their day to day lives and it's good to know I'm helping people." "Although the dog collar can set up barriers for people with no faith, I'm an independent chaplain, so faith, or lack of it, isn't important, it's the person I'm interested in." last updated: 28/06/07 |
