Coco Gauff can't back up her break, immediately gifting Cristina Bucsa a route back into the contest.
Another unforced error and that is a break to love. A really poor game from the fourth seed.

Coco Gauff - and the American fans inside Arthur Ashe Stadium - know this is a huge game for the home favourite now.
A hold of serve to consolidate the break would take her a game away from the fourth round.
It isn't going to plan, however.
A double fault and back-to-back unforced errors give Bucsa two break back points.

A series of unforced errors cost the Spaniard, and that is a big moment for Gauff after what has been a tricky 80 minutes so far.

Bucsa has such a relentless game plan.
As soon as she got her backhand in play, Gauff was across court and she was waiting for the error.

There are few areas of the court which these two players can't reach and they delight the crowd with a breathless exchange.
Side to side, forwards and back. Drop shots. A lob. It's great fun.
Gauff eventually takes it with an angled volley which Bucsa can't divert back in play. Bucsa, though, holds out from deuce.

No such issues here. A wide forehand from Cristina Bucsa brings up game points, and Gauff holds to 15 after the Spaniard hits a backhand long.

Today Gauff is just giving herself some more time.
Receiving a 90mph serve and she's still two metres back behind the line.

But Bucsa sees this one out too, landing a forehand and heading to her seat at the change of ends with a 2-1 lead.

Cristina Bucsa makes a positive start to the second, recovering from 0-30 down to hold with a backhand winner four points later.

"I just wanted to be solid and play one more ball in because, for sure, it was really tricky.
"For sure, this is the most positive part of the year for me. I'm happy with the progress, it's a nice beginning and it's nicer to play tennis the way you want to play. I'm happy to be here and have another chance.
"Today was on and off but at the important moments in the tie-breaks, I maintained my focus."

It was a tough start for Gauff, but the former champion is up and running now as she takes the opener with a fifth straight game.

Two hours and 26 minutes is usually a three setter but both sets were compelling. It wasn't the best tennis but there was a handful of unbelievable rallies.
I thought the all-court play of Bouzkova made for a fun match. Something Swiatek can keep working on is feeling more confident moving forward and I think she'd be happy walking off this court with a winning tie-break record in 2026.

Coco Gauff eventually wears down Cristina Bucsa's stern resistance to break for a second time and turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead - and the chance to serve out the opening set.
The opening set?! This already feels like we've been playing a 48-minute match tie-break...

It's been a particularly scrappy game, this. But it feels like a significant one.

It took two tie-breaks and just shy of two and a half hours but the former champion progresses.
Marie Bouzkova made her work for every point and the Czech deserves so much credit for her performance - the crowd agree as they give her a warm ovation as she exits the court.
For Swiatek, the bid for a second US Open title goes on and she will take confidence from coming through such a big test.
