But title contenders Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Mirra Andreeva are among the big names who have safely progressed to the fourth round.

After finding a way past Spain's Cristina Bucsa, Coco Gauff was asked how she adapts her game in different matches: "It's all about how I'm feeling, if I feel good I'll play offensive. When I feel like I'm not playing the ball well I play defensive.
"I think in the first set today it was defensive. Once I got into my rhythm, I could hit through a bit more. I had to sacrifice some points to get going again."
On how her mindset changes during slams: "I feel like I'm used to getting to the second week now. I woke up today and I was like 'oh we're already in round three'.
"I'm enjoying the experience out here, there's expectations being American and I want to do well in front of the fans. Last year I put so much pressure on myself."

Only Aryna Sabalenka has claimed more consecutive straight-set wins than Coco Gauff this season.
Sabalenka recorded 11 between Brisbane and the Australian Open.
This is Gauff's eighth since the third round in Cincinnati.
The American has strong momentum heading into the second week in New York.

The scoreline doesn't really do the match justice, but Coco Gauff completes the job with minimum fuss in the end!
Cristina Bucsa caused the fourth seed problems, but Gauff had too much in the end and rolls on to round four for the fifth straight year in New York.

The Spaniard never recovers from an opening double fault, and Gauff takes full advantage with a backhand winner.
Now she will have the chance to serve this out - and she will be desperate to do that at the earliest opportunity because this has been far from straightforward.

Coco Gauff can't back up her break, immediately gifting Cristina Bucsa a route back into the contest.
Another unforced error and that is a break to love. A really poor game from the fourth seed.

Coco Gauff - and the American fans inside Arthur Ashe Stadium - know this is a huge game for the home favourite now.
A hold of serve to consolidate the break would take her a game away from the fourth round.
It isn't going to plan, however.
A double fault and back-to-back unforced errors give Bucsa two break back points.

A series of unforced errors cost the Spaniard, and that is a big moment for Gauff after what has been a tricky 80 minutes so far.

Bucsa has such a relentless game plan.
As soon as she got her backhand in play, Gauff was across court and she was waiting for the error.

There are few areas of the court which these two players can't reach and they delight the crowd with a breathless exchange.
Side to side, forwards and back. Drop shots. A lob. It's great fun.
Gauff eventually takes it with an angled volley which Bucsa can't divert back in play. Bucsa, though, holds out from deuce.

No such issues here. A wide forehand from Cristina Bucsa brings up game points, and Gauff holds to 15 after the Spaniard hits a backhand long.

Today Gauff is just giving herself some more time.
Receiving a 90mph serve and she's still two metres back behind the line.
