Tournament leader Shane Lowry speaking after his course-record 62: "It was nice. It was real fun out there. I got off to a nice start and then I just kept going. I felt great out there. Just kept my foot on the gas and tried to keep hitting good shots and keep holing putts and it was a nice day.

On thriving on the home support: "It was great. I think this is going to be the nicest day of the week as well, so the crowds are out there. It looks amazing. I'm sure this place looks amazing on TV.

"The crowds were amazing out there today. They support me along the way and it was nice to give them something to shout about."

Speaking of 63s, Rasmus Hojgaard has catapulted himself into contention with one of his own.

An improvement of nine shots on yesterday's round, the Dane is well placed despite a bogey finish.

Hojgaard pipped Rory McIlroy to the 2024 Irish Open at Royal County Down, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him challenging for the trophy come Sunday evening.

He's not the highest-placed Dane, though. That's Jacob Skov Olesen, who followed an opening 68 with a stellar 64 to join Li Haotong on eight under in a tie for second.

Li Haotong finishes an excellent round in fitting style with a birdie at the last to card a seven-under 63 and sit three shots off Shane Lowry.

After signing for a second successive 69, Rory McIlroy said: "Frustration [is my emotion]. I just didn't have it on the greens. I really struggled to read them. It's hard whenever you struggle to read them, and then when you do get over the ball you're trying to trust what you're seeing, but everything else that you have seen hasn't went the way you thought, so it's hard to put a committed stroke on it."

On if he's hopeful of getting into contention: "Yeah, Shane [Lowry]'s going well, Tom [McKibbin]'s had a couple good days. I'm hitting the ball well enough, I just need to try to hole a few more putts or get a handle on reading them a little bit better.

"But, yeah, I feel like I certainly have the ability and at least have the long game to do it. Just need to hole a few more on the greens."

Shane Lowry walks on to the 18th green to a wonderful reception and it's richly deserved after today's showing.

After another well-judged approach, he has 25 feet or so for his 10th birdie of the round and a 61.

Not quite. It comes up a foot shy and he taps in for a 62 - a superlative round of golf from the Irishman.

Jon Rahm will sign for a 67 while Patrick Reed cards a 68, but they've been comfortably outshone by the 2019 Open champion.

That was a great watch.

Tom McKibbin, speaking after a second-round 67: "Yeah, very happy. Obviously the conditions aren't as difficult as they were yesterday. Yeah, some tricky pins out there, and nice to sort of take advantage of the start again and hold on for the rest of the round."

On the more benign conditions compared to yesterday: "It was much more enjoyable. Obviously it took about an hour less to play. Yeah, not quite as stressful.

"I felt yesterday that you could have a big number at literally any point of the round. Today you sort of knew that the holes were gettable and a number of holes that were kind of tricky but not as stressful as yesterday."

The birdies keep coming for Jacob Skov Olesen. Three in a row after a three at the 16th and he moves to eight under.

Six under for the round, he's Shane Lowry's closest pursuer.

A par for Shane Lowry at 17 means a birdie at the last will give him a glorious 61.

Does he have another birdie in him?

The crowd surrounding the 18th green let out an "awwww" as Rory McIlroy's approach lands six feet straight over the top of the pin.

But it's a horror show from there! He misses his short birdie putt and lips out with the one coming back! A total lapse in concentration and the defending champion cards a disappointing 69.

He's currently nine adrift of Shane Lowry.

Bob MacIntyre settles for a closing par and a fine round of 65 while Brooks Koepka holes a lovely birdie putt to card a 66. At one over, he may have done enough to stick around for the weekend.

Jacob Skov Olesen has responded to that bogey on 13 in the grand manner, birdieing the 14th before nearly holing his approach into 15.

Another birdie there and the Dane moves to seven under alongside Li Haotong.

Rory McIlroy finally gets a putt to drop!

It comes at the 17th and he moves to three under for the tournament. Eight shots off the lead but with plenty of time to make up ground over the next couple of days.

Tom McKibbin has signed for a three-under, improving on yesterday's round by one with five birdies and two bogeys.

At five under, he's well placed to contend for his first Irish Open title over the weekend.

Oooh! Shane Lowry gives his birdie try at the 16th a good run and he cracks a wry smile as it shaves the left edge.

Unlike at 13, he safely negotiates his tricky one coming back and stays at -11.

Li Haotong erases his bogey on 13 with a fine birdie at 15. He's back to six under for the round and four back of Shane Lowry.

Jacob Skov Olesen slips up for the first time today at the 13th and drops back to the group on five under, six adrift of Shane Lowry.

Shane Lowry pours in a lovely 20-footer at the 15th to move back to -11, eight under for the round.

That bogey on 13 is a distant memory now. Huge crowds following this group today and they've been treated to a superb round from the 2019 Open champ.
