Hull City boosted their Championship survival hopes by stunning high-flying Sheffield United with an emphatic victory at Bramall Lane.
Matt Crooks opened the scoring after just six minutes on his first start for the Tigers with an excellent first-time finish from 25 yards following a swift counter-attack.
The Blades piled on the pressure after the interval, but Hull doubled their lead with their first real attack of the second half when Matty Jacob poked in Cody Drameh's low ball from close range.
Joao Pedro's cross was then turned into his own net by Harrison Burrows late on to seal a third consecutive away victory for Ruben Selles' side, who move out of the bottom three, while the Blades missed the chance to go top.
Chris Wilder's side remain second, but hand the initiative in the race for automatic promotion to leaders Leeds United and third-placed Burnley who meet at Turf Moor on Monday.
Hull City, refreshed with a number of new faces joining in the January window, including debutant striker Kyle Joseph and midfielder Eliot Matazo, are up to 18th and two points clear of the bottom three.
Sheffield United had the first sight of goal when Ben Brereton Diaz burst into the penalty area from the left and saw a powerful drive to the near post beaten away by Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur.
A flurry of corners followed but it was the Tigers who struck the first blow, springing a counter from one end of the pitch to the other in a matter of seconds.
Blades defender Alfie Gilchrist could only block Abu Kamara's attempted through ball into the path of the onrushing Crooks, who fired a sumptuous arrowed effort into the far corner from just outside the box.
The hosts began the second half with increased urgency, as Sam McCallum saw his low drive blocked and Callum O'Hare went close from a looping header that was tipped over by Pandur.
Tyrese Campbell thought he had equalised in the 57th minute after latching on to Rhian Brewster's headed through ball and steering past Pandur, but it was ruled out for a very tight offside call.
Hull then delivered a sucker-punch six minutes later when Drameh appeared to mis-hit a cross but it fell kindly for Jacob at the back post to toe-poke in his first league goal for the club from six yards.
O'Hare spurned a promising opportunity to reduce the deficit after 73 minutes, slicing wildly off target from just inside the box after the ball dropped to him.
Campbell also broke into the box from the right seven minutes from time but saw his left-footed strike excellently blocked by Sean McLoughlin who slid in bravely to thwart the effort.
It summed up a night that was not to be for Sheffield United, which was only compounded when Burrows turned into his own net via the post in the 88th minute as Joao Pedro tried to squeeze the ball across goal.
