I take my hat off to Arsenal. What Arteta did this season especially given the build up to this season and the last two, three, four years being called 'bottlejobs' etcetera, it was just building up to this moment.

On whether Arsenal could build an era of dominance:

Arsenal have won it now. They have got the winning mentality and know what it takes to go a whole season, get over the mark and win. They have got the players, if they have a good summer recruitment wise. They could potentially do it.

On Pep Guardiola's departure from Manchester City:

It's a moment in time for English football. Guardiola has got an absolutely incredible legacy. What he has done for football, his philosophy, what he's done for the Premier League, he has left big shoes to fill.

But, I think he has left the team in a very good place. They are ready for a new manager. Yes it is very sad he is leaving but it is unbelievable what he's done.

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC MOTD: "I leave with an incredible sense of peace, I gave everything. Good things, bad things, it's part of the sport. I feel so much love, that is the truth.

"I am a guy who likes to move - in Barcelona with one of the best teams ever but I moved. Then Bayern, I moved. As a player I went to Mexico and Italy. To spend 10 years - I connected incredibly with the people in the club. That's the most important thing when you work. Khaldoon [City chairman], he is one of the kindest people I have met in my life.

"I said to my dad, 95 years old - it doesn't matter what happens, if you have to come in a wheelchair, but I want you to come and see how the people love your son. I am a father and one day I want my son and two daughters to feel what I feel from the people of Manchester. This is the best gift.

"Thank you so much to all the people. The name of my family, my mum and dad will be there [on the new North Stand]. I asked desperately to remain a part of this club."

A lot of players came in last summer and there were questions but Regis le Bris created that culture and philosophy. The fortress that is the Stadium of Light, the atmosphere, picking up the amount of points that they have there is unbelievable. Those fans going away in Europe next season, they must be buzzing.

  8. 'Arsenal means the world to us'published at 19:58 BST 24 May

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke, speaking to Sky Sports: "You can see, feel and hear what this means. All of the fans behind me are overcome with emotion after 22 years. If anyone deserves this, it's this group

"[We are invested] Emotionally, financially, everything. This club means the world to us. I think it took some people a few years to realise what that really meant but we have great people, players and coaches. We just have to continue providing the resources to do magical things like they did this season.

"It's incredibly special. It's a slower burner than our championships in the United States when you have the playoff system. The points system is a grind, credit to the staff, players and Mikel [Arteta] for keeping their heads on. They deserve it.

"Today is about enjoying, tomorrow we will get back to work because there is one more to play."

  9. Sun sets on another Liverpool seasonpublished at 19:57 BST 24 May

    .

The sun is setting on another Liverpool season.

Mo Salah's children are still out on the pitch kicking a football.

Arne Slot was asked in his post-match press conference if there is anything he would have done differently this season.

"Many things," says the Dutchman. "I haven’t been perfect but I would have answered this question exactly the same way when we won the league last season.

"Not every decision can be the right one but before I made them they felt like the right ones to make. If you are asking me for one word to describe the season I would say injury.”

On Salah & Robertson farewells: “Two legends who in the last nine years have won nine trophies. I’ve said many times this club knows how to celebrate league titles, how to handle tragedies and how to celebrate these two players.”

  10. 'It's been an emotional week saying goodbye'published at 19:56 BST 24 May

    FT: Liverpool 1-1 Brentford

    Liverpool

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's been an emotional week saying goodbye to the people you work so hard with. We knew today would be the toughest, saying goodbye to the people who pay their money to follow us all over the world. I can't thank them enough from the bottom of my heart."

On his reception: "Bobby Firmino and when James Milner left, Jurgen Klopp, we saw how he got received. The reception I got will stay with me for the rest of my life. This is my club and I love everything about it. I know I've played a small part in the history of the club, which I'm really proud of.

"We wanted to end on a high. This season has been so up and down until the end. The last four were a real struggle. Champions League football is so important and the leads have it so they can kick on now. This season has been well below our standards. I can watch from afar and I really hope nothing but success for them.

"It's the love everyone has shown me. Everyone in the building and, most importantly, the fans. That's what will stay with me forever. I meet people in the street and they say nice things. Players and managers come and go, but the one thing that stays is the fans."

This always seems to surprise outsiders but most Evertonians have had enough of Moyes. With nothing to play for today he selects five central midfielders instead of any wingers to "keep it tight". Attacking talent on the bench can't get a look in. We started playing after the subs but it was too little too late. It's been like this for weeks. Time to move on from Moyes.

  12. Postpublished at 19:54 BST 24 May

FT: Man City 1-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to BBC MOTD: "It's been an outstanding week and season, especially the way we finished. The last three matches, our focus was very important. We recovered our energy and quality to beat Liverpool. Manchester City and finish with 65 points and fourth in the league.

"A huge honour me to compete with Pep Guardiola. He is the best. I built my career a lot of time competing against him, especially in Spain. I didn't beat him. I came here to England, with Villa I could beat him. That makes me a privileged man to compete against him. The level he has - he is the best coach in the world. It is very difficult to prepare a game plan against him."

  13. 'Massive collective achievement'published at 19:54 BST 24 May

    Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea

    Sunderland

Sunderland head coach Regis le Bris, speaking to BBC MOTD: "It's amazing. Outstanding. The stadium is crazy now and the fans deserve this. The planets aligned today but we needed to do the job and it was good management at the end. We were only focused on our game, not even at half-time.

"It's a massive collective achievement. What we showed last season and this was being together. We can be ambitious but we have to work hard. The fans are really important - they are a huge part of this club. It's a community and we are proud to represent them."

  14. 'We need more and want more'published at 19:53 BST 24 May

    FT: Brighton 0-3 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, speaking to Sky Sports: "I really enjoyed it. It was a test coming here for us today. The boys were fantastic. It was a real joy to watch so it was nice to finish that way.

"There were so many positives today. Patrick [Dorgu] first half for his goal and playing so well, getting the young boys on the pitch for more experience, seeing the supporters behind the goal and Bruno [Fernandes] having his day as well. I just though for the whole group it was so positive and shows where we are at in terms of confidence and looking after each other."

On Bruno Fernandes: "It's a fantastic thing to have [the assists record]. Nobody is getting away from it. It just shows his consistency and quality. He does it so often and is so creative in certain areas, it was no surprise he did it again."

"It always starts from the next day onwards. It's never enough, it should never be enough, it doesn't change it just gives us a taste for more. We need more and want more as a football club and certainly as a team. It is a really good place to finish and gives us a good foundation for next season and beyond."

  16. 'We have to go to sadness then we think about the rest'published at 19:52 BST 24 May

    FT: West Ham 3-0 Leeds

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to Sky Sports: "Tough, tough day for us, especially for our fans.

"We knew it was going to be difficult, it was not in our hands. We did our part and we hoped for the best - it didn't happen. We have to pass the sad moment that we are living."

On where things went wrong: "If you ask me to go back to look and where and when, this is not the moment. This is the moment to feel this sadness.

"We had a tough mission, the boys tried it and today showed things could have been different. It didn't happen but at least we finished with dignity at our home. We won but it doesn't take away the sadness."

On performances this season: "We did many things good, we did things bad and it was punished. It is tough to look back at analyse.

"I just spoke to the boys, they are all sad and we have to go to the sadness then we think about the rest."

On his future: "Our respect for the supporters means it is not the moment to talk about the future. We have to apologise to them, thank them for the support.

"All these boys were able to establish a good relationship with the fans. They've helped us so much, even today with knowing the result, they gave us energy.

"We should understand the day, tomorrow will be a new one and we'll start thinking about what we have to do."

On message to the fans: "West Ham has to be in the Premier League. We are a big club that has to be in the Premier League. West Ham are going to need their support. The club plays better when we are with them and it makes us proud the way we established this support with our supporters.

"It is a very difficult moment for all of us: the board, the staff, the coaches, the players and more than anything, the fans. It is going to hurt, it is going to be tough.

"But one thing is for sure, West Ham has to be in the Premier League."

  17. 'Thank god we have done it!'published at 19:51 BST 24 May

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: "There were doubts. It was understanding that I was able to take them this far [to second place] but maybe someone else has to come and do the final job. But thank god we have done it! I feel a lot of joy and a little bit of belief.

"Yes, [I doubted myself]. It is part of the job. There are many things that are out of my control and that is why you need the best people around you."

    FT: Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea interim boss Callum Mcfarlane, speaking to BBC Match Of The Day: "It's a disappointing result and performance. We didn't hit the levels this group is capable of. Sunderland deserved to win the game. I thought they started well and we didn't match their tempo and intensity. I was hoping we would get momentum after Cole Palmer's goal.

"We are gutted, disappointed and haven't performed well enough. This club needs to be in Europe and these players need to be in Europe. We'll need to review the season and reflect to give the new manager the best opportunity to attack the new season."
