The flags on top of the pavilion are fluttering in the breeze.

England are looking for an inspirational spell from someone to drag themselves back into the game or just to bowl with great discipline, do what NZ did in that first innings and bowl relentlessly.

  4. NZ 25-1published at 7 overs

Henry NIcholls is one of those batters - similar to David Warner - who likes to undo and redo the velco fastens on his batting gloves between balls.

Devon Conway pinches a single off the third ball of the over with a drop and run into the on side.

Archer's final ball of the over is full and wide and Nicholls adroitly square drives it for four.

New Zealand are the kind of team that you look at, they're not going to take the game away from you quickly. England need to keep probing.

  6. NZ 17-1published at 6 overs

Matthew Fisher strays on to Devon Conway's pads and he flicks it square for three.

They are the only runs off the over.

  7. NZ 14-1published at 5 overs

Henry NIcholls picks his moments of when to play, leave and defend Jofra Archer fairly adeptly.

The Kiwis were pretty good at seeing of the new ball in the first innings. England will need to grab the bull by the horns here.

40 men have opened the batting at least 20 times in Tests in England. Only one of them (Mike Brearley) has a lower average than Tom Latham's 22.52.

  9. NZ 12-1published at 4 overs

Matthew Fisher with a wobble seam delivery thuds into the pads of Devon Conway from over the wicket.

There's an appeal but Joe Root shakes his head in the cordon.

Jofra Archer had nipped off the field momentarily but is back to bowl his third over.

Oh, that's close! We saw a few bold leaves at Lord's.

  11. NZ 12-1published at 3.3 overs

Henry Nicholls not quite in Kane Williamson's class.

    Big shoes to fill.

Meanwhile, Matthew Fisher presents a beautiful seam position to Devon Conway and gets a ball to nip back into him.

A whisker away from Conway's off stump.

This is absolutely the sort of day, situation and pitch when Kane Williamson would be getting a hundred.

It's perilously close. It's been quite the over, quite the drama at The Oval.

  14. NZ 8-1published at 3 overs

Serious pace from Jofra Archer and handy lengths as well.

Henry Nicholls has a bit of fiddle at one which nips from the England quick and fizzes past the inside edge.

England needed that wicket and they need more if they're going to drag themselves back into the game.

  16. NZ 8-1published at 2.3 overs

Henry Nicholls attempts to pull Jofra Archer and the ball spoons up in the air before thudding into the turf.

Was there some bat? Maybe. A healthy dose of thigh pad, certainly.

    91mph from Archer. Brisk.

It's a good channel. It was there to be left and Tom Latham dangled his bat.

Tom Latham hangs his bat to a delivery back of length from Jofra Archer and he edges it into the gloves of James Rew.

There was just enough movement off the seam from Archer to the left-hander who trudges back to the pavilion knowing he should have left that well alone.

The Oval crowd cheer in celebration. A handy early breakthrough for England.

  19. NZ 8-0published at 2 overs

Some uneven bounce with the new ball has Matthew Fisher open mouthed.

He skids one slightly low-ish between Devon Conway's bat and pad.

It's a good pitch but there's still some juice in it.

New Zealand have got an incredible chance to level the series if they bat with sense today.
