That was a nasty one for Jofra Archer to stop. It's landed just in front of him.

  2. NZ 65-2published at 18 overs

Rachin Ravindra skips down the pitch to the final ball of the over from Joe Root and miscues a bit of a slog which Jofra Archer does well to stop at mid-on.

  3. NZ 62-2published at 17.1 overs

Joe Root decides he's the man to make the breakthrough.

His first delivery, round the wicket, pitches and skids into the pads of Henry Nicholls' defensive prod and England appeal.

Root decides against the review. The television replays show it was the right call with it going on with the arm rather than straighten.

  4. NZ 62-2published at 17 overs

Brendon McCullum is pictured clutching a walkie talkie - a la Elliott in ET - presumably relaying some crucial tactical tidbits from the balcony.

Josh Tongue is a little full to Rachin Ravindra with the final ball of his fifth over who he deftly clips it from right under his nose for four.

  5. NZ 57-2published at 16 overs

Rachin Ravindra born under a lucky star...but he has plenty of talent to boot let's not forget.

The Kiwi batter effortlessly clips the penultimate ball of Sonny Baker's over through mid-wicket for four.

    Top shot, that.

Rachin Ravindra has had a charmed life in Test cricket so far - just 70% of the chances he'd created have been taken, well below the average for Test cricket.

It's an interesting time of the game because Rachin Ravindra will give you a chance, we've seen that but he can take the game away from you.

If he starts to play well, he will take the game beyond you within a session quite comfortably.

  8. NZ 52-2published at 15 overs

Salt in the wound for Josh Tongue as Rachin Ravindra clips Josh Tongue for four through mid-on for four.

James Rew appeared to close his hand too quickly attempting to cling on to that catch.

It was a tough chance because it kept really low. It went to James Rew fast but he should have taken it.

  10. dropped catch

Ravindra dropped on sevenpublished at 14.3 overs

James Rew lets one out of his graps.

Josh Tongue induces a drive from Rachin Ravindra and a thick edge flies to Rew's left.

The Somerset wicketkeeper has the ball in his glove after diving but it pops back out.

It's been an impressive start for Josh Tongue but England are not going to strain to hard here, they do need wickets.

You have to wonder. If England bowled like this, with these fields, on the morning of day two, would NZ start the second innings with a 100-run lead? I am not sure they would.

  13. NZ 46-2published at 14 overs

Henry Nicholls plays in a fairly measured fashion to Sonny Baker in the first over after drinks.

An important period for England here. A couple of wickets in the session and they will be right back in this game.

This England side, when things get ragged, they find it very hard to stop the raggedness. It unravels and it unravels for a long time.

  15. drinks break

New Zealand 44-2 at drinkspublished at 13 overs

Josh Tongue carefully places his fingers on the seam at the top of his mark, like a tailor carefully pinching some cloth.

He concedes his first run off his 16th delivery after Henry Nicholls manages to nudge one into the leg side for a single.

    Drinks.

Sonny Baker, after a hop, skip and a jump, bustles in.

Henry Nicholls fiddles with his glove straps before clipping one off his hip for a single to keep the over.

Incidentally, Baker's idiosyncratic run-up is a byproduct of bowling at nets indoors where he did not have much of a run-up to work with.

New Zealand have been much more secure so far this innings. They've played 20% false shots - at this point on day one, they were at 27%.

  18. NZ 38-2published at 11 overs

Henry Nicholls sees off a maiden from Josh Tongue which tightens things up after a fairly expensive over from Matthew Fisher.

Ben Stokes is back on for his second spell for Durham. Again, he's convinced he's got a wicket after an appeal for a catch down the leg side. He didn't even really turn around to the umpire.
