What a feeling that will be for Sonny Baker to get off the mark, really good catch again from Jacob Bethell. Ravindra will be kicking himself.

  2. wicket

    Ravindra c Bethell b Baker 33 (NZ 107-4)

A first Test wicket for Sonny Baker!

A leap and a pumped fist by the young England seamer before he is engulfed by his team-mates.

Rachin Ravindra was just beginning to get going but is now heading back to the pavilion, having offered a flying edge.

It's a smart catch from Jacob Bethell, his second of the day, taking it tight to the body at gully.

Despite its bowl-first reputation, The Oval has been a place where you can recover from starting poorly with the bat. India won in 2021 after posting 191; England won in 2023 after scoring 283; and India won again last year after putting 224 on the board.

  5. NZ 107-3published at 35 overs

For the second over in a row, Rachin Ravindra takes two boundaries off Josh Tongue.

And once again, it's a tidy one followed by a bit of a hack.

A lovely drive through mid-off brings up New Zealand's hundred, before a hurried pull goes aerial and crosses the boundary at fine leg.

I've been impressed with England, it's a good contest between bat and ball and they've made New Zealand work really hard for their runs.

PitchViz today so far is 6.4/10 - unsurprisngly, that is easier for batting than on any day at Lord's in the first Test.

  8. NZ 98-3published at 34 overs

A first change for England as Sonny Baker comes on to replace Matthew Fisher - he had figures of 0-12 from five overs in the morning session.

He starts with four dot balls to Daryl Mitchell, before the New Zealand batters take a couple of singles to close the over.

This is Josh Tongue at his best.

  10. NZ 96-3published at 33 overs

    Valuable runs for Rachin Ravindra.

He guides Josh Tongue's first delivery neatly past point for four, then two balls later sees a big edge past gully for another boundary.

Tongue is still bowling handily, his final ball raps Ravindra on the pad.

Re 14:39. Vogel is cognate with English 'fowl'. So Vogler is the same as 'Fowler' in English.

    Ian, Glasgow

Basil Butcher would happily prepare the meat for Alistair to Cook

    Ashley, Bristol

Farokh Engineer, Vijay Merchant, and Nari Contractor from India surely deserve a mention in the professions XI.

  12. NZ 88-3published at 32 overs

One more single for Rachin Ravindra to end Matthew Fisher's over.

New Zealand have scored 13 runs and lost one wicket in the seven overs since lunch.

Jordan Cox, didn't have much time but he was a little late to it. It's another one of those where you wouldn't really expect the ball to go over there. great technique form him but it was a really, really tough chance.

He's dropped him! It would've been a really, really super catch. That went really, really sharply.

  15. dropped catch

Mitchell dropped on twopublished at 31.4 overs

    The plan almost comes off!

Fired down the leg side by Matthew Fisher, Daryl Mitchell goes after it and the ball absolutely flies towards Jordan Cox who has been stationed at leg slip.

The England debutant dives low to his left and gets two hands to the ball but can't hold on.

Mitchell takes a single to move to three.

Matt Fisher was a few years above me at School in North Yorkshire. For a charity event he bowled to some of the teachers and was promptly dispatched for six by the maths teacher Mr Akbar. Glad to see he’s put that behind him taking wickets on the biggest stage!

Sonny Baker is the first Sonny to play Test cricket for England and Jordan Cox is the first Jordan to play for England.

  18. NZ 86-3published at 31 overs

    First boundary of the session.

Josh Tongue's 87mph delivery clips the leg of Rachin Ravindra, who can't get his bat on the ball to play the glance. It runs away for four leg byes.

Tongue then cuts his final delivery through the New Zealand number four - unclear if the ball took an edge before it died just in front of James Rew.

What about Mike Proctor? A proctor is a supervisor or monitor who oversees an examination.

For professions, could we have Bert Vogler? Either a South African spinner, or a German bird-catcher.

    Kit, Glasgow

Never heard of a 'Vogler' before, Kit. Every day you learn something new...

  20. NZ 81-3published at 30 overs

    Careful, Daryl.

The New Zealand number five goes fishing outside off stump and comes pretty close to offering an edge behind off Matthew Fisher.
