Has Sonny Baker strangled Henry Nicholls down the leg side here?

Given not out on the field.

England captain Joe Root sends it upstairs.

Sonny Baker is an exciting prospect for England.

  4. NZ 22-1published at 11.3 overs

Sonny Baker is tossed the ball by Joe Root.

His third delivery is short and squares up Henry Nicholls, beating the outside edge.

Baker gasps. Nicholls does some gardening.

    That was close.

I'd be intrigued to know the conversations that New Zealand have had coming into this game. If you look at the England bowling attack, they haven't had a great amount of experience. If they put on the pressure, England might have to rely on Archer.

If I was planning on playing against them, if you can get after one of the seamers, Joe Root is going to have a problem. It's just whether or not they are that type of team. New Zealand are quite an old school team, just go out there and dig in.

  7. NZ 21-1published at 11 overs

A bit of seam movement for Josh Tongue as he gets one to nip away from Henry Nicholls.

The cameras pan to Rob Key, who is sat with Richard Thompson and Andrew Flintoff, and is chuckling away at something or other.

Jofra Archer's opening over had an average speed of 89.9 mph. That's the fastest first over of a Test match in his career and the fastest ever recorded opening over in England.

  9. NZ 19-1published at 10 overs

Tom Latham is showing the necessary discipline and judgment here.

The New Zealand opener appears content to see the shine off the new ball from Matthew Fisher as he grafts through a maiden.

Latham sees the final ball of Fisher's over hoop back into his heels, but it's tailing away to the leg side so there's nothing really doing despite the England seamer's exasperated expression.

Latham is eight off 36 balls.

Tom Latham's batting average for the last three years:

Re 11:55 - Joe Root had a leg slip, a leg gully and a short leg in that over.

  12. NZ 19-1published at 9 overs

A smart change, then, Michael, to bring Josh Tongue into the fray.

The Nottinghamshire seamer is immediately into the corridor of uncertainty forcing Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls to play at a few more deliveries

Nicholls shows expert judgment to leave a nip-backer from Tongue from the penultimate delivery of the over. Two types of leave etc.

Mid afternoon, this pitch is going to be doing nothing. If there's going to be any movement, it's going it be now. England are going to have to make use of it.

  14. NZ 17-1published at 12:09 BST

Matthew Fisher has his hands on his head at the end of the over after another delivery goes through to wicketkeeper James Rew.

In truth, there was plenty in that over for Tom Latham to leave well alone.

Fisher, perhaps, trying to create a bit of theatre.

It looks a beauty of a pitch, really good batting pitch. There isn't a great deal out there for the seamers, maybe a bit of nibble.

A peach from Jofra Archer at the start of the seven over.

The England fast bowler fizzes a short-ish delivery past a tentative defensive prod from Tom Latham.

Great to see Archer back in the whites and bowling at full throttle.

Matthew Fisher's average swing so far is 3.3 degrees, highest for any spell for any bowler in the series so far.

Little bit of a strangle. Face of the bat, Conway almost paddled it around there, Rew is delighted. How is that, he'll be delighted with that.

England make the breakthrough, a bit of a wrangle but I don't mind that in this Oval pitch.
