David Owen Norris explores how the simple word Amen has inspired the creativity of thousands of composers across the centuries.

He traces music from many different traditions, not least Judaism and Islam, which embrace many more meanings of the word than the average Anglican church service would suggest. Alongside the glories of florid cathedral Amens and Handel's famously long Amen in Messiah, Norris discovers how black gospel composers and even ballad songsters have played with the word.
