The Medway area

Over the new 20 years thousands of new homes and jobs are to be created in the Medway area, under the 'Thames Gateway' banner, adding to the already completed developments at Chatham Maritime and Historic Dockyards.

The idea in the 'Medway Towns' is to create a cohesive 'linear city', spanning 11 km of the River Medway, with a rejuvenated Chatham town centre at its heart.

Medway Council and their regeneration team - the lavishly named 'Medway Renaissance Partnership' are in charge of making sure the different projects are delivered successfully over the next 20 years.

Overall around 16,000 new homes will be built and about 20,000 jobs created. The plan is to make the whole 'Medway Waterfront' area a distinctive place, well known and loved for its inspiring buildings and open spaces, riverside walks and historic environment.

The main site earmarked for transformation is Rochester Riverside, a large industrial site on the river Medway close to the heart of Rochester. There will also be a major face-lift of Chatham waterfront, the Pentagon Centre and parts of Strood and Gillingham.

Regeneration across Medway is well underway. Chatham Maritime is now a well established residential, education and business location. The Historic Dockyards is a popular tourist attraction and Dickens World opened in 2007.
