Image: SEEDA The visionRochester Riverside is the largest of the Thames Gateway sites in Medway and, together with the Medway Waterfront proposals elsewhere, hopes to turn the region of Strood, Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham into a coherent European City. The site will include homes (including affordable housing), a hotel with conference facilities, school, doctor's surgery, business units and shops. Where is it?The site lies between the river and the railway line and stretches from Rochester Bridge to Doust Way. The River Medway forms the eastern boundary of the site, while the London to Dover railway line forms the western boundary. ![]() Rochester Riverside. Image: SEEDA When is it happening?The development period is 2004-2012 and the first development of 550 homes, retail and commercial premises, offices and cafes will start in 2009. Crest Nicholson PLC were selected as the preferred developer for the first 600 homes. Rochester masterplanHistoryThe site has been home to a wide variety of industrial, commercial and maritime businesses since the beginning of the 19th century. Many of these have declined or stopped trading and a substantial area of the site is derelict, contaminated and under-used. Who's involved?Rochester Riverside is project managed in partnership by Medway Council's 'Medway Renaissance' team and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). The land is owned by both organisations.
