I think given a few days to reflect on this, Fery won't have too many regrets because he was just up against a guy who is one of the most talented guys on the tour, a difficult match-up, and wasn't really allowed to settle into a new court and new surroundings today so he was always chasing.

Very few opportunities offered to him by the Italian, it was the toughest round one draw of all the Brits and that's the way things can fall for him still climbing up to that seeded bracket at Slams - which he very well could be coming into Australia [Open].

He has everything to gain over the next few months.

13th seed Lorenzo Musetti, speaking in his on-court interview after beating GB's Arthur Fery: "5-3, that match point I did not hit very well the ball on the passing shot. I felt a bit of fear. Even though I served good, I missed three kind of easy forehands.

"The key was my attitude. I was really focused. Maybe I wasn't playing my best tennis, not feeling really well the ball, but I was focused on what I have to do and I stick to the plan we had before the match.

"Really, really happy - missing two Grand Slams was tough, so I'm happy to be back in New York."

On playing in New York: "You've been amazing since the first point. The first time I came here in New York, I remember the juniors, playing in the final was really nice. Every year, it's like a piece of my heart always coming here. Thanks to the Italian crowd, there's many here in New York. Definitely loving the New York energy and bringing home all the energy I got from the people and the lights of the city.

"In the middle of last week, I had a day off and I went cycling with my father and uncle in Central Park. It was really fun and it's nice to have some family and friends here in New York that I can spend some time off [with] and relax the mind, getting back the energy for these matches."

It's worth remembering that Arthur Fery had only just crept back into the world's top 300 when last year's US Open was taking place.

Now he's a Grand Slam semi-finalist and ranked 33rd in the world.

It didn't go his way today, but it will serve as a learning experience for the 24-year-old on his US Open debut.

Maybe it's a good thing that Lorenzo Musetti wrapped up the win when he did. The rain has just started coming down again in New York.

Musetti is a quality player and once he was able to settle in mid-way through that first set, he was able to apply a bit more pressure and that is what this trip for Arthur Fery has probably been about.

He's learned about himself last week in a very positive way at Winston-Salem, now at the Grand Slam his first time at the US Open, a little different. But I think he's got plenty of upside to work on for the rest of the year.

Credit to Lorenzo Musetti. A deserved victory for the Italian 13th seed on his return to Grand Slam tennis after missing the French Open and Wimbledon.

One thing, if I'm thinking back early in the first set and through the match, is Fery has tried to be aggressive behind the second serve of Musetti.

Fery has been inside the court trying to take it early and see if he can go with those type of tactics.

Not so fast, says Arthur Fery. The British number one never gives up and he wins the next two points to force Lorenzo Musetti to serve the victory out.

The net cord works in Arthur Fery's favour, sending the ball back to Lorenzo Musetti's side of the court. Deuce.
