Elena Rybakina, speaking on-court after her round victory: "She [Frodin] played really well today and she has great shots, great serves and it was not easy. I'm just happy to be here, play here and thank you so much for coming and supporting us. It's always a nice atmosphere and I really enjoyed it. Just looking forward for the next one."

On returning from injury: "We see day-by-day, I'm glad I played the match and I won the match and we'll see how I am tomorrow because I had to take a break and wasn't playing or doing much physically. So, for me now it's a step at a time and the most important is to recover and listen to the body but for now it's been OK."

On potentially becoming world number one should she made the semi-finals: "I'm definitely motivated. I feel like I had the opportunities before and it didn't go my way. Of course, everybody plays really well and as I said, with this injury I've had I feel like for me, each day is important and of course it will be an amazing achievement but it's still too far [away].

"I need to focus on my day off tomorrow, my recovery and then just keep on going."

It was only seven weeks ago that Arthur Fery salvaged British hopes at Wimbledon with an astonishing run to the semi-finals.

He arrived at the Championships as the world number 114 and had never been beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.

But the 24-year-old defied all expectations to reach the last four, where he finally fell to French Open champion Alexander Zverev.

Now Fery starts the US Open as the 33rd-ranked player in the world, the British men's number one and a recent first-time finalist on the ATP Tour.

Can he have another fairytale fortnight in New York?

Elena Rybakina made light work of that, so now it's time for our next match on Grandstand.

Grandstand erupts as Thea Frodin obliterates an ace for 0-30. She's had a bit of joy on Elena Rybakina's serve late in this second set.

Another ace wipes out the second!

Thea Frodin spends several seconds at the back of the court, staring at the wall, after missing a backhand for 15-30.

Elena Rybakina follows it with a thumping backhand return.

Rybakina survives the first challenge to her serve.

Elena Rybakina's service game has been going on for more than six minutes. That's probably longer than her previous two or three combined!

This time it's the Kazakh second seed who can't convert advantage, missing a backhand.

Another break point comes and goes for Thea Frodin. Elena Rybakina gifts her advantage with a wild forehand but Frodin can't capitalise on a second serve, returning long.

Elena Rybakina says not a chance. Booming wide serve which Thea Frodin can only just lay a racquet on.
