Etcheverry's numbers were certainly a little brighter than Fearnley's in the serving department. Winning a bit more behind the first serve when they landed, and striking enough winners from the back of the court as well.

Maybe there is hope for Jan Choinski! His first love hold of the match.

It's not been a high quality first set out on court 12 but Tomas Martin Etcheverry won't care. The Argentine clenches his fist and shouts as he watches Jacob Fearnley's backhand flump into the net.

He takes the first set 6-3, breaking the Brit's serve three times.

Both players should be concerned by the unforced error count - 15 for Etcheverry, 17 for Fearnley - but the latter should be particularly worried by his serve. Five double faults in the set, and more than once his serve failed him on a big point.

Jan Choinski might be getting through his service games, but he's not doing any damage whatsoever on Botic van de Zandschulp's serve.

Jan Choinski rips a forehand winner down the line, but he can't pull ahead for long, with Botic van de Zandschulp replying with a cross-court backhand winner into the corner for 30-30.

But Choinski holds firm on the next two points, patiently trading blows from the baseline and waiting for Van de Zandschulp to make this mistake, which he does eventually.

Jacob Fearnley pulls the game back to deuce but then produces another double fault in a huge moment.

Down 0-30, Jacob Fearnley drives Tomas Martin Etcheverry wider and wider off court on his backhand side with an assault of cross-court forehands before winning the point with a smash.

On the next point, his forehand sits up off the net cord and is quickly hunted down by Etcheverry for a short cross-court winner.

Jan Choinski lets out a frustrated cry as he plants what should be a simple backhand shot straight into the net.

He has improved over the last few games, but Botic van de Zandschulp's level hasn't dropped much and the Dutchman holds.

Jacob Fearnley once again gets a foothold in his opponent's service game, leading 15-30 after following a very deep return into the net and forcing an error, but he can't pounce.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry secures the hold to 30 with a hefty T serve which is returned into the net and lets out a gruff "come on!".

Jan Choinski is called out with a foot-fault, which rattles him enough to double fault and hand over another break point opportunity to Botic van de Zandschulp.

For once, though he can't make the most of it and Choinski recovers to nudge ahead in the set.

More pressure on Jacob Fearnley's serve as Tomas Martin Etcheverry fights back from 40-0 down with some bludgeoned baseline strokes to close to within one point.

However, Fearnley catches him off balance with a short forehand to complete the hold.

This time it's Tomas Martin Etcheverry's turn for a double fault - 0-30.

He shows a glimmer of his class, biding his time in a lengthy baseline exchange before whipping through a forehand winner, and levels the game with a timely first serve which is returned into the net.

Another forehand winner, this one a rocket of a one-two punch off a T serve, completes the hold for the 27th seed.

We've seen very few winners early in this match so that game was a much-needed tonic.

Jan Choinski opens up a half-chance for himself at 30-30, but he can't disguise a drop shot and Botic van de Zandschulp meets it comfortably before swatting away a winner into the open court.

And there's no looking back for the former US Open quarter-finalist.
