He will do well to save par - not ideal after just taking the lead.

Well, that was an adventure.

Rory McIlroy tugs his drive into the left rough at par-four fourth. Despite drawing a good lie where the spectators have been walking, a wild swipe sends his ball flying to the right.

He chips up to 20 feet and slams the putt home! Brilliant par save.

Tommy Fleetwood holes his own 20-footer to save par but Ludvig Aberg slips up and a five takes him back to one under.

Add a sand saver to a successful scramble for Scottie Scheffler as he gets up and down from the bunker on 10 to make his par, courtesy of a six-foot putt.

Pars are still more than decent out there in the conditions, and it doesn't look like it's going to be any easier later on today.

Adam Scott is playing in his 100th consecutive major this week. The 45-year-old Australian started the run at the 2001 Open Championship (his second major after playing in the 2000 Open).

It's easily the longest current run and second only to Jack Nicklaus' incredible record of 146 majors, which ran from the 1962 US Open to the 1998 US Open.

Scott is off to a decent start and the 2013 Masters champion has just birdied the par-three 11th, after three bogeys on his front nine.

Adrien Dumont de Chassart doesn't just have one of the best names in golf - he's got plenty of game, too.

The 26-year-old Belgian has two wins on the second-tier Korn Ferry tour, and while he's missed his last three cuts, he is enjoying his second US Open appearance.

Four birdies, four bogeys, six pars. He's just two off the lead.

What did Keith Mitchell do at the turn?

He played his first nine holes (10 through 18) in six over par.

Since then, he's five under through five having just made eagle and is back to +1 for the tournament.

Two under, three holes to go.

Birdie, par, birdie, par, birdie, par.

His recent holes suggest a birdie is next...

Alex Fitzpatrick is having a year to savour. He won the Indian Open and triumphed at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside older brother Matt, who tees off later tonight, which was enough to secure a PGA Tour card.

Since then, he has contended at a couple of big events and is going along OK on his US Open debut.

One bogey and nine pars has him in a tie for 12th.

The 13th is a brilliant hole - just 367 yards for a par four but it's the fifth hardest on the course today thanks to a clever tee box that means you're hitting down across the fairway at an angle.

Brooks Koepka falls for the trap as he runs out of fairway and into the rough, and from there can only hack it out into the bunker. But he manages to rescue his par with a nine-foot saver.

"Oh, come on!" sighs Sam Burns as his putt scoots by the hole.

It was from 18 foot so it was a long shot - but it was also for par and the miss ensures he'll drop another shot away from the leaders.

That's how to do it when your putter isn't behaving. After watching birdie putts stay above ground on the previous two holes, Rory McIlroy crunches a glorious wedge into the third green, spinning it back to three feet for his third birdie of the round.

Ludvig Aberg also sent a pin-seeker into the green but his birdie try - to become the first player to reach three under - trickles off to the right.

More frustration for Tommy Fleetwood, though. Another short par putt misses and he slips back to two over.

Sam Stevens is not going anywhere.

The American, ranked 54th in the world, has moved level with leader Ludvig Aberg.

He holes a 40-foot putt for his third birdie in five holes.

Scottie Scheffler makes a nice par on the ninth from a tricky spot in the rough wide of the green - and that's surprisingly his first up and down of the round, having gone 0-3 on scrambling before then.

That'll be a key metric this week with some dramatic run-off areas around these greens, so Scheffler will have to improve on that going forward. Mind you, we're well used to the world number one making slow starts in tournaments.

Something tells me this one will be harder to make a big comeback on though.

A necessary update on Rickie Fowler's attire. I hadn't actually clocked his shoes!

A great chance for a Brooks Koepka birdie missed by the American as he slides a 10 footer beyond the hole - a little too far beyond the hole for comfort actually as it leaves a bit of a stinky one coming back. But in it goes for par.

Disaster for Patrick Reed!

After a composed front nine, he makes a mess of the 10th and walks away with a double bogey.

He then pulls his tee shot on the 11th.

Unravelling a little here....

Rory McIlroy hits a delightful shot into the 251-yard par-three second, but he's tentative with his 22-footer and misses out on what would have been a glorious two.

The putts aren't dropping for the six-time major winner.

Ludvig Aberg visited the greenside bunker but splashes out and rolls in another confident-looking putt to stay out in front on his own, while Tommy Fleetwood follows him in for a three.

There really isn't much colour out there on the course yet, bar Brooks Koepka's pink stripes, but we've found another all-white to go with JJ Spaun from earlier.

Rickie Fowler, who will no doubt be wearing his statement orange on Sunday and has just closed within two thanks to a birdie at 11, is also decked in white.

When I asked you if you could pull of this style, most of you said absolutely not.

Works for Rickie though...right?
