The Republic of Ireland Under-21s finished second in the group behind England

The Republic of Ireland Under-21s handed England their first defeat in qualifying for Euro 2027 to finish second in Group D and secure a play-off position.

The table-topping Young Lions had already sealed their place at next year's tournament before Tuesday's game, and took the lead early on when Tyler Dibling tapped in.

But the Republic of Ireland fought back superbly as Tommy Lonergan levelled matters in the 21st minute with a driven finish into the bottom corner, before Conor McManus put them ahead just before half-time when he fired in from Trent Kone-Doherty's pass.

Lonergan scored his second goal of the match in the second half when he did well to react to a bouncing ball and drove in.

Noah Jauny made a great save to deny Tyrique George from reducing the deficit late on.
