Wales were hammered 7-1 by Austria in the final game of their European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign.

Matty Jones' side were aiming to do the double over their visitors at The Oval in Caernarfon after a 2-0 win in Linz last October.

But they were outclassed by an Austrian side who were hunting runners-up spot and a play-off berth in Group I, only for those hopes to be dashed by Denmark's draw with group winners Belgium.

It was a miserable end to the campaign for Wales, who also conceded seven goals to the Belgians and six to the Danes in losses at Rodney Parade in Newport.

They finished fourth in the table ahead of Belarus with a goal difference of -21.

Head coach Jones was forced into two changes to the starting line-up that lost 1-0 to Belgium in Westerlo.

Joel Cotterill, making his 19th and last game for the age-grade side, and Reece Munro came in for suspended defenders Dan Cox and George Nevett.

Austria were in front in the third minute through Luca Weinhandl after he linked up with Erik Kojzek and doubled their lead after 19 minutes when his Sturm Graz team-mate Jacob Hodl finished calmly.

Crewe's Calum Agius got Wales back into the game approaching the half-hour when he followed in to finish from close range after Tanatswa Nyakuhwa's shot was parried.

However, the Austrians were back in control before half-time thanks to another calm finish by Genoa defender David Puczka, who rounded goalkeeper Joe Duncan after latching onto a header by Kojzek.

It was 4-1 in the 56th minute when Oluwaseun Adewumi scored after a scramble in the six-yard box and a fifth followed when Nikolaus Wurmbrnad's cross took a huge deflection off Noah Anyadike.

Cardiff defender Anyadike, who became the youngest player in League Cup history in August, then gave away a penalty that Kojzek converted and Jannik Schuster added a seventh from a corner.

Belgium sealed group top spot and qualification for the tournament in Albania and Serbia with a goalless draw in Denmark, who now go through to the play-offs.
