Women's Football Weekly podcast

It's not only the WSL that is back - the Women's Football Weekly podcast is back up and running.

The gang visited a tonne of WSL media days during pre-season to give you the lowdown ahead of the new season.

New for 2026/27, WSL matches broadcast on the BBC will be followed by The Women’s Football Fallout, a 15-minute show exploring and debating the biggest stories in the game on BBC iPlayer, YouTube and the BBC Sport website & app.

A brand-new BBC Women’s Football YouTube channel, external has launched, alongside the existing BBC Women’s Football TikTok, creating a dedicated home for new and original video formats and some of the biggest stories in the game.

Fans can follow the action wherever they are, with live radio commentary from the biggest matches across the WSL, UEFA Women's Champions League, Women's FA Cup and WSL Players Cup throughout the season on BBC Radio 5 Live, 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds.

BBC Radio is also the home of commentary from the international game, with live coverage of this autumn’s crucial World Cup qualification play-off matches.

This season, fans can continue to enjoy live coverage from the biggest competitions in the women's game, including the WSL, Women's Champions League and WSL Players Cup final across BBC Sport.

BBC TV and iPlayer will bring 25 WSL matches live throughout the season, kicking off with Chelsea v Aston Villa live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Saturday 5 September at 12:25 BST.

Alex Scott leads presenting duties this season, alongside Jeanette Kwakye, Sarah Mulkerrins and Betty Glover, along with expert pundits including Ellen White, Fara Williams, Anita Asante and Steph Houghton.

Commentary will come from Robyn Cowen and Vicki Sparks, with Rachel Brown-Finnis and Gilly Flaherty as the main lead co-commentators.

Fans can enjoy the best teams from across Europe in the Women’s Champions League with the final, both legs of one semi-final and four matches from earlier round all available on free-to-air BBC platforms.

And later in the season, BBC Sport will once again be the home of WSL Players Cup final, bringing one of the biggest fixtures in the domestic calendar live and in full to audiences across the UK.

Arturo Ruiz has just done his first media conference as Brighton manager and made a strong impression.

He was direct, precise and enthusiastic in his responses and revealed he had already followed supports group SheGulls on Instagram.

He's been running in the evenings around Brighton to get to know the area and put out a passionate rallying call to fans for Sunday's opener.

Ruiz has had just a week to fill the shoes of former boss Dario Vidosic but he says there were strong foundations laid for him to build on.

The Spaniard praised the leadership of senior players such as Lia Walti and Fran Kirby in helping him settle in.

We were told to expect a high-pressing style with focus on possession-based football but he did remind us to be patient with the transition.

Crystal Palace have confirmed that Shanade Hopcroft has returned for a second spell at the club.

The 28-year-old midfielder represented Palace during their last WSL season in 2024-25.

Olid's arrival comes at a time when United fans' frustrations are at an all-time high.

Question marks have been hanging over the club about their ambitions for the women's team and the apparent lack of attention from owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Their budget is significantly smaller than that of WSL rivals Arsenal and Chelsea and an underwhelming transfer window has led to many questioning if United can compete at the top this season.

But Olid's appointment is an intriguing one and she brings a track record of success with her from her time at Hearts.

United are moving in a new direction, focusing on developing young players and building an attacking football identity.

Olid was keen to stress this in her first meeting with the English media and came across as an astute tactician.

Sources at the club describe her as "football obsessed" and believe her ruthless work ethic will set a good example to young players breaking through.

She has been reunited with her former assistant coach Gavin Beith and has already hinted about recruitment plans in January that suit her attacking style.

Eva Olid confirmed at this morning's press conference that Manchester United are not expecting to do any business today.

She did say they have plans in place for moves in January.

On new signing Rebeca Bernal's availability against London City Lionesses, she added: "Yes, she’s available. Today, she will have her first training session.

"She was working with a Spanish coach to help her adapt quickly to how we want to play."

The opening game of the 2026-27 Women's Super League season could see two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas make her London City Lionesses debut when they host Manchester United on Friday (19:00 BST).

The WSL action will continue the following day as eight-time champions Chelsea take on Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (12:30 BST), live on BBC One.

On the season's first Sunday, defending champions Manchester City begin their campaign at home against promoted Birmingham City while Tottenham host West Ham United.

Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace, also promoted from the WSL 2 as the English top flight expands to 14 teams, will host Liverpool and Everton respectively.

Title hopefuls Arsenal return to Brighton where a 1-1 draw in May ensured Manchester City won the WSL title.

We're still not ruling out any action at Chelsea but as the day goes on, we're yet to hear whispers of any movement.

As it stands, there is nothing expected to happen but they have been known to do late deals and there are areas they want some cover in.
