England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked about Bukayo Saka:

"That is the other big competition on the right wing, between Noni [Madueke] and Bukayo. They do it at Arsenal as well. They do it with respect for each other. The way they push each other in training, sometimes on opposing teams, sometimes in same position if we go through patterns. It's just a pleasure to see.

"Bukayo is getting better and better. He is more free in his movement, he feels no more pain. He was able to do both of our last two days of training at the highest level. He is ready to go, without telling you if he will start or not."

Rashford deserves a start because of his goal but Gordon was starved of service in the last game as most of the attack was down the right. Get the game won and then make changes second half to rotate the squad.

England manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking about the wingers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon: "They have an amazing dynamic. They compete for one place, but the way they compete is as friends and teammates. They compete on a high level of respect, that is what I see in training.

"I was happy the fans could see the level of commitment and friendship. Everyone was happy when Marcus scored and Anthony was on of the first ones out of the bench to congratulate. That is the spirit that everyone buys in to. That is the way to go forward."

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked about the mindset of his attacking players: "I am very lucky because my players arrived with this mindset. I didn't have to get them in to it. Now it the difficulty is to keep them in the mindset. A very famous conductor said "I don't want to disturb the music and I don't want to disturb the musicians" and that is what we try and do, not disturb the players and the match, just encourage them to play with freedom, especially in attack.

"It is quite impressive how the players also buy in to the idea of defending together and that is what we did in the second half [against Croatia], we pushed out constantly in to a high press. That is what we will try [against Ghana] but the game will play out it itself. We cannot predict what is happening.

"I predict a bit of a different game to Croatia because of the different approach, but who knows. We have to be ready to find answers to any questions asked tomorrow."

  5. 'It is a different approach to the last match'published at 12:04 BST

England manager Thomas Tuchel on Ghana: "The counter-attack is one of the threats. They play with a lot of physicality and speed. [They have] Individual quality and they don't mind if they have less of the ball because they burst into high speed attacks and play very direct on the ball. They are not shy to use long balls.

"It is a different approach to the last match but that is the beauty of it; playing different cultures and approaches to matches. It's on us to adapt and bring strength and adapt to their strengths. We need a top performance if we want to win."

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked about the team for tonight's match:

    "Everyone is available.

"We had a big influence from the subs [v Croatia] which we really appreciate and it proves how everyone buys into the idea. They came in and gave everything to decide the match.

    "We need exactly that."

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked to clarify what he meant by 'we have a point to prove':

"We have to and want to prove to ourselves that we know what makes us strong. We know the capability and potential of the players. We believe and trust in this group. Tomorrow is the next game and there is no other thought in our minds. We take it step by step, as boring as this may sound, but this is the way to go.

"Like I said, this is a different game to Croatia. We have to be ready. It feels like full belief and trust from my side. Let's see tomorrow."

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked about Ghana's motivation for the match and England's own motivation: "Bad news for Ghana; we will also be motivated. I see no reason why we wouldn't. We play on the biggest stage and we want to prove a point to ourselves. That is where we are and who we are. There is no advantage, there cannot be any advantage [to Ghana].

"I still believe we play in one of the strongest groups in the World Cup. It started with a top 10 opponent and continues with Ghana who are traditionally a top footballing nation. They have outstanding players and with a new coach they have a new formation, a solid block. They will ask difficult questions and will make life hard for us. We both have three points we both want to take the next step and we will battle for the win."

If England can get the goals early, they can hopefully ease up a bit.

I think there will be changes from [Thomas] Tuchel in the starting 11 from the first game and I think he will look at the defence, the defence was vulnerable.

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked about his relationship with Harry Kane, and if it is different because he is a 'key player':

"He is of course a key player. There are a lot of them. The most important thing is that the players buy into the idea that we do this tournament as a team and that is the case that makes it special.

"Do they get more attention? I don't know, but they give a lot of attention to the players who are not in the same spotlight. That makes them special, they take care of everyone and that is the spirit in which we attack the tournament."

Performance of substitutes is irrelevant in terms of a starting selection. Opposition are less tired, at the start of the game, as it goes on tiredness sets in and substitutes can then make an impact. Coaches select a starting team and a finishing team.

    Jonathon, Harrogate

If Saka is fit, he should start ahead of Madueke, Rashford in for Gordon who was anonymous and Guehi in for Stones, the rest i would leave the same as the previous starting 11.

    Smudger, Surrey

I'm not with Tony from Bury. We need Gordon to run to the byline against Ghana as they'll defend deeper than Croatia, and I don't think Reece James has the engine to play 90 in midfield, and Elliot Anderson is just as key to this team as Kane!

Think we'll keep the same line up. My concern is down our left. Nico look vulnerable to anyone running at him. Think Ghana wont press like Croatia so Stone will be move forward into the midfield to create options for others to run forward.

    Colin, Havant

I'm not a big fan of Madueke because he doesn't have enough of an end product for me but the rest of his game is great. He was better than Gordon in the first match and could have had an assist so start him with Rashford. Also Guehi for Stones.

    Micheal, Herts

Think should stick with same line up, as the last game. One possible change, Guehi for Konsa. But difference is very marginal.

  15. Will Tuchel's appetite for risk pay off?published at 10:59 BST

    England v Ghana (21:00 BST)

In the coaching world, there is a maxim some believe in - that teams are built in the image of their coaches.

Gareth Southgate was impressively able to steady the ship before pushing them extremely close to glory. He did so in a highly pragmatic manner. His sides didn't create end-to-end affairs as though it might have increased their chances of scoring, it would also have increased the likelihood of them turning the ball over and conceding.

By reducing variance and keeping the game tight, eventually England's quality would shine through. Against top-level quality, their collective tactical ideas could appear undercooked.

When they did go ahead, one critique was they would look to defend their lead rather than build it - just look at the Euro 2020 final as one example.

Thomas Tuchel's appetite for risk is greater. England's substitutes against Croatia were like for like in profile rather than changing the dynamic or balance of the team.

Yes, they looked more fragile than Southgate's side defensively. But it's a trade-off many fans will be willing to accept.

Minimal changes tonight for me. We can rest and rotate against Panama if required. Maybe rest Rice depending on how his hamstring has recovered - I'd like to see Mainoo as a more progressive option in that midfield. Guehi also into centre back.

    Thomas, London

We just beat one of the top 15 teams in the world. Don't change a thing.

    H, Leicester

I would start Gibbs-White ahead of Gordon and Madueke any day of the week. However, Tuchel doesn't realise that Morgan exists.

Despite fighting for game time, Noni Madueke and Bukayo Saka are close away from the pitch too with Saka calling his team-mate his "brother".

Arsenal boss Arteta found ways to get both wingers on the pitch at the same time in 2025-26, which may be something Tuchel opts to do as the World Cup goes on.

Madueke was utilised on the left wing by Arteta, while Saka also featured in the number 10 role as the Gunners lifted the title.

Madueke made 43 appearances last season - scoring eight goals and registering four assists in all competitions - as Arsenal ended their trophy drought.

However, Madueke only started 16 times in the league. Competing with Saka and a knee injury limited the number of times he was picked from the off.

He provided a bright spark for Arsenal in the Champions League final when replacing Saka from the bench in their loss to Paris-St Germain on penalties last month.

And he may have a similar role for his country, if England progress to the latter stages of the World Cup.

Pickford, O'Reilly, Guehi and Stones, and James. I'd give rice a rest, given his injury, start Mainoo instead with Anderson & Bellingham. Then, Rashford in for Gordon, rest Saka again, with Madueke still at RW. Then, Kane up top. Come on lads

    Daniel, Southend

I'm not with Tony from Bury. We need Gordon to run to the byline against Ghana as they'll defend deeper than Croatia, and I don't think Reece James has the engine to play 90 in midfield, and Elliot Anderson is just as key to this team as Kane!

    Jim, Suffolk

I think Tuchel's big decision is whether to stick or twist with the two centre backs. I think he stays as is but I'd replace Guehi for Stones. Rashford probably deserves a start - Gordon's pace off the bench is a good card to play.

  19. Player first v system firstpublished at 10:45 BST

    England v Ghana (21:00 BST)

    Umir Irfan
    Football tactics correspondent

The most obvious change since Thomas Tuchel's appointment has been his willingness to leave star names out of the squad.

At times during Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate's England had Phil Foden on the left wing, Cole Palmer in attacking midfield and Trent Alexander-Arnold in holding midfield.

Tuchel left all three out of his World Cup squad.

In simple terms, this can be explained as Tuchel taking a system-first approach while Southgate took a player-first approach.

Tuchel decided on a clear system and a set of tactics he wanted to use, then looked at the players who could best carry out the roles he wanted - irrespective of name.

It is one of the reasons Morgan Rogers - more suited to what Tuchel wants from his number 10 - was picked over Foden and Palmer.

Southgate appeared to look at the best individuals he could select before trying to build a system around them, and at times was questioned for shoehorning players into roles they were not perfect fits for.

That is partly why we saw changes to the starting XI and system mid-tournament under Southgate.

Both approaches have proved successful throughout football and come with their own pros and cons.

I think most of us fans would have Guehi in for Stones and Rashford for Gordon. I’d have Spence in for James and Eze for Madueke too, but I’m not the manager thank goodness - we’d have never qualified if I was.

    Robin, Coventry

Change half team to assure adequate rest, Henderson, Riley, Konsa, James, Rogers, Anderson, Eze, Watkins, Rashford, Henderson. A win tonight would enable Tuchel rest all starting team members for the Panama game. This would give Kane, Rice and Guehi two games rest before knockout phase.

    David, Wiltshire

Surely we go strong tonight, swapping in Rashford & Guehi for Konsa & Gordon. If we're 3-4 nil up after 60/70 mins, rest our big stars. I'd like to see Watkins and Toney get a run out tonight ahead of Panama game, where I'd rest Kane, Bellingham and Anderson completely.
