There was a bit of social media chatter about Marcus Rashford and whether Manchester United fans really want him back.

Well, the sound of anticipation when he embarked on his first run down the left wing suggested they do.

I think everyone accepts Rashford lost his way, under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, and even he expected to join Barcelona at the end of last season.

However, he is back now. All the word I am getting is that he will stay for the season.

Manchester United will benefit if he is on top form.

For them coming here, these are the occasions they want and their supporters want.

A performance is what Gary O'Neil will want today.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is not a man who lets emotions get the better of him.

Neither is he someone who will offer a soundbite in a reactionary response to a question.

However, he has been genuinely irritated by the insinuation his side lacked passion in their shock defeat at Hull last Saturday.

In the immediate aftermath of the 2-0 loss, he rounded on former Middlesbrough forward Jan Aage Fjortoft, who now works for TV, who claimed his players lacked passion, saying the assertion was ‘ridiculous’.

On Friday in his pre-match press conference, Carrick was peppered with questions demanding his explained what went wrong and why it could not simply be down to a lack of passion.

“I don't have to give you the total reason, because we know what we're trying to improve on,” he said.

“I'm just saying I think it's so easy and lazy to just go ‘team loses a game, so everything's wrong; this is wrong, this is wrong, (you are) not trying enough, (there is) not enough passion’. It's just like the obvious answer.

“It’s just a game, though. We've probably played like that and won games, and everyone goes, 'What a great team, what a great coach, what a great load of players'.

“When you're analysing it, you’ve got to dig deeper than that and understand the details of it.”

Fulham

Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a tough game for us. We didn't deserve it. In the second half, the first 20 minutes, we were at a level where we can play football with that energy and focus and the quality we want. Sunderland were better for many minutes. We need to improve many things, especially the energy and the attitude.

"If you want to come here and play like you want to play, then you need to have the mentality. It's not easy but we are a new team with new ideas. We will improve with time. We will have ups and downs. We need to realise we need to show more energy and fight for every ball.

"Chelsea is a very tough team but when you face a team like that in your stadium, the motivation is high. You have to do it every single week, we know that.

On better away form: "It is a target for my team. Some days we will play as bad as today but that means you have to run, fight, and be narrow.

On the transfer window: "We are working on it with the club. We know we have two days so we are working because we can do with the squad being stronger and more balanced."

Carlos Baleba doesn't quite have the stardust of Raphael Varane, who was also introduced to the Old Trafford crowd after completing his move from Real Madrid in 2021.

But Baleba cost more.

His £70m move from Brighton moves him into the top 10 of Manchester United signings.

Top of the list remains Paul Pogba. Antony is second. Jadon Sancho and Rasmus Hojlund are also ahead of Baleba.

Everyone connected to the Old Trafford club will hope Baleba does better than them.

"Who are you?" sing the travelling Ipswich fans - or words to that effect - as new Manchester United signing Carlos Baleba walks onto the pitch to be introduced to the crowd.

Baleba does not feature today as he has an ankle problem.

Ipswich Town boss Gary O'Neil, speaking to Sky Sports on his side's opening-day win: "It gave everyone a nice boost. We worked hard in pre-season, a lot of change, so the club is transitioning. Important to start the season well. It doesn't make the next test any easier."

On naming the same XI: "I'm not obsessed with that. We looked at Manchester United, we did our best to figure out what we thought they would be which was tough. We picked a team that gives us flexibility and ability to cope with what they will offer."

On new signing Exequiel Palacios: "I would expect to see him at some point. He has trained well, a big talent. Strong bench today."

Chelsea

Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez, speaking to Sky Sports, after his debut: "I spoke with Chelsea legends John Terry and Petr Cech. I know how big this club is and what we want to achieve this season. I came here to help.

"I had an amazing seven years at Aston Villa. I have come here to challenge and to try and win the Premier League.

"I trained only one day with the team. The guys have treated me really well in the last day or two. I know the talent we have up front. I try to bring that solidity in the back."

On the win against Brighton: "A win is a win. I know it wasn't a perfect game. But in the end, winning and moving on is what we need. We've got 36 games left and it's one week after another.

"I am here for a reason. The front three is amazing. When we go forward, we can hurt teams. We had a lot of chances to finish the game. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro had chances to kill the game. At the back, we need to bring the goals down."
