That's your lot from today's Champions League reaction.

As we said at the beginning, it may not have had the goals that Tuesday had but it certainly sparked the talking points.

    Here are the top lines:

We're not leaving you totally as of yet as we've currently got another live running right now. In case you've missed the news, Scott Parker has left Burnley, eight days after their relegation from the Premier League.

I think there needs to be a serious debate about whether or not VAR is retained in football. The problem currently is, it'll be continuously "tweaked" until no-one knows how it should function. Get rid, keep the goal-line technology and further improve automated offside technology - factual situations.

Referees have got to have the bravery to stick with their own decision. It was not a clear and obvious mistake and everyone knows that. But Simeone's performance makes the referee doubt his decision.

  5. 'Two shocking decisions went against Arsenal'published at 10:38 BST 30 April

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

    Chris Sutton
Former striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

People can talk about the Arsenal performance. Were they good enough in the final third? Probably not.

I thought Atleti were excellent in the second half and deserved something from the game.

Having said all that, there were two shocking decisions which went against Arsenal.

I didn't think it was a handball by Ben White because the ball deflected off his shin first and his arm is out a little bit but the fact is it came off his shin first.

And Hancko, clumsy as you like, steps on part of Eze's foot and they don't really protest - I always think that's the biggest tell from players. They did for the Gyokeres penalty really vehemently, got in the referee's face.

When you see the referee go to the monitor you know what's going to happen, but I would have liked to see the referee be stronger in that moment. He gave it in real time and from everything I see from the monitor there was contact on Eze's foot. The penalty should have been awarded and Arsenal should be going back to the Emirates in a much stronger position.

  6. 'I don't think there is enough contact'published at 10:36 BST 30 April

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

What did our pundits have to say on the overturned penalty?

"I don't think there is enough [contact] to give a penalty," said former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock.

Once again, everyone missing the point of whether you thought it was or wasn’t a penalty is irrelevant. It shouldn’t have been overturned based on UEFA’s own rules. Not a clear and obvious error so VAR shouldn’t have intervened.

    Luca

I never thought it was a penalty, not all contact can be a foul. That said, even my most ardent Arsenal hating self has to admit that VAR had no reason to get involved. It was completely ambiguous and sticking with the on field decision was the fairest option.

Similar 'foul' on Lookman earlier in the game not given because the player didn't fall over. Should we really be up in arms about VAR if at the end of the day a consistent refereeing decision was made?

  10. 'We agree with the referee'published at 10:26 BST 30 April

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak speaking to TNT Sports: "It was an intense game from both sides. Both sides were looking for a win but I think we had a good game but at 1-1, there's a lot to decide in London next week.

"There's always relief when a penalty is overturned, I hope I would have stopped it anyway. It was the referee's decision to change it and we agree with him.

"I was close to stopping the first penalty but it was just the power. He hit it with maximum power but it's in the past. We need to focus firstly on the weekend and then to London.

"We will not think about the previous game where we lost 4-0 there. I believe it will be a different game and we will do everything to get a good result and get to the final.

"We don't think about lifting the trophy, first we need to work on the pitch in the second leg. Arsenal want to win the Champions League as well so we need to pass them first."

I'm not sure what the debate is. Eze gets to the ball first, defender doesn't get any of the ball, trips Eze up, penalty awarded on field, penalty should stand. Crazy that it was overturned.

  12. 'This is not what we wanted VAR for'published at 10:20 BST 30 April

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on TNT Sports

I simply do not think it was a clear and obvious mistake that needed to be overturned. That is not what we wanted VAR for, that is not why it was brought in. The referee should have been allowed to make the decision and VAR gets too involved.

The referee should not have even been made to go to the screen. With Simeone looking on, I think the referee has buckled under pressure. There is definite contact and it is clumsy from Hancko.

  13. 'It was against the rules and I do not understand it'published at 10:17 BST 30 April

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to TNT Sports about Eberechi Eze's overturned penalty: "Speaking to the boys and understanding the penalty incident for the second goal getting overturned. It was against the rules and I don't understand it. Very upset. There is clear contact; he makes the decision and you can't overturn it when you have to watch it 13 times."

Was the referee influenced? "I don't know. That's an answer for him. It's the wrong decisions and it changes the course of the tie."

On Atletico's penalty: "It is a rule and they have been quite consistent with that. I have nothing to say on that. The one I have to say is the penalty.

"There are a lot of positives. A lot of very good things that we did. We knew we would have tough moments. Their home record is once again.

"We are in an incredible position. We have to play in front of our people. It is in our hands."

What happened: With the score at 1-1, referee Danny Makkelie initially pointed to the spot when David Hancko caught substitute Eberechi Eze.

Outcome: Then the video assistant referee (VAR) sent Makkelie to the monitor. And then the decision was overturned.

    The right call?

Arsenal will rue their overturned penalty against Atletico. Only last month, we saw a different decision in very similar circumstances.

In the first leg of their last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen, the Gunners were awarded a late penalty when Noni Madueke went down in the area under a challenge from Malik Tillman.

Contact on the England international was slight, with Tillman landing on the forward's boot as he fell to the ground.

BBC Sport discussed this very incident with a senior figure in Uefa's refereeing body. They explained that while they would prefer no penalty was awarded on the field, the contact left the VAR with nowhere to go.

Fast forward to Wednesday's game, and Atletico's David Hancko clearly catching the boot of Eze after he had played the ball.

Soft? Absolutely. A clear and obvious error? Based on what Uefa said about the Madueke incident, the decision should remain with the on-field call.

UEFA are consistent with these but I don't think they should be commended for that. Giving these handballs is as as arbitrary as giving a penalty if a defender kicks the ball with their left foot 5 times in a row. The punishment is wildly disproportionate to the "offence".

  18. 'Referees influenced by the decision in PSG game'published at 09:55 BST 30 April

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

    Steven Gerrard
Former England and Liverpool captain on TNT Sports

I think the referees have been influenced by the decision that happened on Tuesday night. They have seen the handball committed by Alphonso Davies that led to a penalty and thought we need to follow suit and give this one from Ben White - even if he tries to move his arm out of the way.

  19. 'It has to be a penalty'published at 09:52 BST 30 April

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

If last night was a penalty (for PSG, when Bayern's Alphonso Davies handled), that has to be a penalty.

As frustrating as the second penalty was from an Arsenal fan, you can see why it was given. One thing I will say is at least UEFA's approach is consistent unlike the decisions we see in the premier league. Is this approach better and clearer than that used in England?
