UEFA are consistent with these but I don't think they should be commended for that. Giving these handballs is as as arbitrary as giving a penalty if a defender kicks the ball with their left foot 5 times in a row. The punishment is wildly disproportionate to the "offence".

    Steven Gerrard
Former England and Liverpool captain on TNT Sports

I think the referees have been influenced by the decision that happened on Tuesday night. They have seen the handball committed by Alphonso Davies that led to a penalty and thought we need to follow suit and give this one from Ben White - even if he tries to move his arm out of the way.

If last night was a penalty (for PSG, when Bayern's Alphonso Davies handled), that has to be a penalty.

As frustrating as the second penalty was from an Arsenal fan, you can see why it was given. One thing I will say is at least UEFA's approach is consistent unlike the decisions we see in the premier league. Is this approach better and clearer than that used in England?

Officials are getting themselves into really complicated areas that they don't need to be in.

If it deflects onto somebody's hand, it shouldn't be a penalty - that seems relatively obvious.

  7. Referees 'adamant that they are nailing it with handballs'published at 09:43 BST

    John Murray
BBC football correspondent on Football Daily

It’s interesting because I actually went to a referee’s briefing earlier this year, and the head of referees spoke about handballs. They are adamant that they are nailing it with handballs. They showed us a series of decisions, and I was sitting in the room unsure about that, and he was definitive saying that is a handball, that’s a penalty.

The handball is a clear penalty according to Uefa's approach this season. I don't agree with it, but even as an Arsenal fan, we have to accept that as a clear penalty under their interpretation that has been consistently applied.

    Steven Gerrard

I think when your arm is away from your body like that you give the referee a decision to make.

I don't think that is given in the Premier League but in this competition it is likely.

What happened: The ball took a deflection off Ben White's body before hitting his arm in the box. No penalty was given, but it was followed by a passionate appeal from the Atletico Madrid players.

Outcome: The video assistant referee (VAR) sent referee Danny Makkelie to the monitor and the penalty was given.

Julian Alvarez then made no mistake from the spot to level the game.

    The right call?

For Uefa, the fact that the arm moves out from the body before the ball hits it would trump the small deflection.

But Ben White's handball against Atletico was a very clear penalty under Uefa's definition. The arm was a long way out from the body and came in to make contact with the ball.

There is some discretion if the arm is being brought in to make the body smaller, but in White's case it started from so far out, a penalty would be expected.

The Premier League is more relaxed than Europe even when it comes to deflections before a handball.

Now you've warmed up, time for penalty two.

Handball or no handball, that is the question...

Agree it's soft but I think any forward from either side would have gone down in the circumstances. Is there a forward out there who says they would not have?.....I personally doubt it! Ref had to give it in my opinion.

    Karl

Yeah Gyokeres's penalty was clear as day. The only defending Hancko did last night was defending Arsenal's lead. Absolutely abysmal showing from an otherwise solid defender.

I think it's a penalty because the defender gets on the wrong side and allows Viktor Gyokeres to go down.

I personally think it's soft, but there probably isn't enough reason to overturn it.

  16. Penalty onepublished at 09:04 BST

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

What happened: Right before half-time, Viktor Gyokeres was bundled over in the box by David Hancko.

Outcome: The penalty was awarded by referee Danny Makkelie and the VAR did not suggest checking the monitor, with the striker converting from the spot to put Arsenal 1-0 up.

    The right call?

Gyokeres did well to get his body in front of the ball and the contact was adjudged to be clear and obvious, though debate was sparked about just how much contact was made and if the Sweden forward went down too easily. Hancko certainly thought so...

@Adam in Rotherham (8:17) - The glaring issue here is that it’s not a clear and obvious dive whatsoever! It’s not even a dive! It’s a penalty all day every day and the purely based on the fact that we disagree, VAR should not be getting involved. #ArsenalRobbed

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

    Chris Sutton
Former striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It’s an OK result, but if you’re an Arsenal player sitting in that dressing room, Mikel Arteta will come out, and I think he will be so angry because they have come so far this season and they would have just liked to be in a position where they could go back to the Emirates, take a lead and try to have an end to the season which is more comfortable.

Now the game next Tuesday is going to be so highly pressurised and the atmosphere inside the stadium so intense because of what’s at stake.
