We're only one game but that's not stopping us from looking at the Premier League table.

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle to BBC Match of the Day: "In the end, I am a bit disappointed. We were so close to getting the three points, for sure. But there is also some brightness, definitely, because the guys were doing an amazing job for over 90 minutes.

"We are a young squad and they really left their heart on the pitch and this is something we can build on."

On Liverpool's penalty: "If you give it, it's a really, really soft one and then you have to give many, many penalties throughout the game and throughout the season. I'm not a big fan of the decision.

"I'm proud, we are proud to see a unit on the pitch. The guys were trying to do it the intense way that we wanted to play. Front-footed, vertical in our approach. This, after such a short amount of time, I'm really happy.

"That is our philosophy, yes. It depends on the opponent but we have a clear idea of how we want to play football and today we saw quite a lot of that.

"I am enjoying it already. I saw the young lads fighting for everything. There was commitment. A good synergy with the fans. This is special, it's going to be a really cool season with big challenges as well. We're realistic but we will go there.

"Amazing. Pure happiness and brightness. I heard many things but I felt the goosebumps straight away. You get energy from the stands and you just want to deliver it on the pitch. This synergy will be something special."

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Difficult to express the feeling. It's probably not the result you want when you come in before the game but we definitely deserve this point and even more. The team has never given up and we've recovered one point and probably the taste is better because we score in the last minute. I think it has been a difficult game in terms of starting to lose the game with this atmosphere and I think we have done enough.

"Both [Newcastle] goals are very similar. Probably different reasons. First one we have a great chance to finish. I think Ryan [Gravenberch] is on the edge of the opposition box and it's a clear corridor to finish. We don't finish it and then they punish us. Great run from [Anthony] Elanga, incredible. And the second one I think we have the numbers to defend better. We probably should have close it before but also give credit to them. You are playing against Newcastle who have fast forwards in transition. But we started the game and the first one we conceded and it puts you under difficulties.

"I've liked a lot of the things I've seen from the team today. Definitely things to improve like the goals but I've seen a lot of things I've liked from the team. I've liked the energy, especially the players coming from the bench. I think we finished the game quite strong physically."

On the tribute to Kevin Keegan from both sets of supporters: "It was probably the best fixture to happen for the first game of the season after what happened. It's good that both supporters can remember him like they did today."

You can't help but feel sorry for Newcastle because they worked hard and they have stunning amounts of pace.

You feared for them before this game, I don't fear for them now.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle speaking to Sky Sports, on the atmosphere in the dressing room: "Their heads are a little down but we know we had many challenges, we're in a huge transition phase at the moment.

On the penalty: "A really soft one, if you give that, they'll be more in the future, I'm not a fan of that."

On the team transition: "It's a brave project but I like the challenge, working with young lads, they were tired. Lewis Miley just came back from an injury but they did an amazing job and it's just about getting adapted to the league."

On how different he finds the Premier League: "The crowd here is unbelievable and the quality. Every change can be decisive and it's something I really enjoy. We're clear in our approach and you can adjust in the game if you plan ahead."

On if there is any more transfer business: "I hope so, today the lads were amazing, a young squad but we have some needs we know internally and we keep that internally. You can count them on one hand."

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler speaking to Sky Sports on what he enjoyed most about the result: "The clean sheet. We defended well, we were really good out of possession. In the first minutes, we struggled a little bit. Villa had the ball a lot and controlled the game but more and more, we got control back. We scored some nice goals, it helped our game and our intensity. Then of course the red card was a game-changer, but overall, the goals we scored were 11 v 11. In the second half we were quite serious, I would say."

On punishing Villa: "It was key, setting the intensity and a trap for them to step into. The last step is about how we accelerate before we arrive and I think these are key details that the boys did really well today."

On getting off to a good start: "It's always good and important to win games, it's a good start and now we have to understand why we had this kind of game and now we have another big challenge ahead of us on Thursday."

You're expecting Liverpool to get top four this season at least but they didn't look like a top-four team today.

There are more players to come in, so you can't make a real decision on how their season is going to go.

There's a definite lack of creativity, and somehow, they must get the best out of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak because you certainly didn't get the best out of them today.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's a strange feeling. Not the result we wanted but it's true, the way we scored the goal in the end, it tastes better. Still, we would have definitely preferred the win.

"We started the game the worst way we knew. Newcastle away, first game of the season, the atmosphere, they have very fast players and we concede the goal. They punished us and we had to go against the result. But we didn't give up in any moment. The energy the players, especially the substitutes, gave us, it was a good recovery.

"Once you concede the first goal, you need the game to go fast. You need things to happen when you're losing. We could control the game in the second half. We had better possession around their box. When we scored, it looked like we were the team going to turn the game but then they scored again."

On Jeremy Jacquet and Víctor Munoz: "Jeremy hasn't done a proper pre-season, so it was kind of expected he didn't finish the game. All the substitutes gave us energy. We need it because it's difficult to last the full 90 minutes with the same players the way we want to play. Players coming off the bench can affect the game.

"Victor almost had another penalty but the referee whistled before conceding it but it was even more clear. So he has really affected the game."

Liverpool

Liverpool goalscorer Dominik Szoboszlai to BBC Match of the Day on his penalty: "I didn't even know what was going to be the decision or if VAR would get involved. I wasn't even there so much, I was just focusing on myself. When the decision was made, I just stepped up and tried my best.

"I decided before, yes. It's always before my run up that I decide where I'm going to go.

"It was a nice game. I would be more happy if we took the three points. But we take the positives, take the one point."

On manager Andoni Iraola: "We are still getting to know each other, the whole team and coaching staff. But we have a good company together and good team spirit and that's all that's needed to be successful."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa's John McGinn speaking to Sky Sports: "We actually started the game very well, we had a chance to go ahead but playing at the highest level, you make a mistake, and the goals we conceded were poor. We apologise to the supporters, it costs a lot of time and money to travel away. 4-0 down with ten men at the Amex, we had a chance to puff our chests out in the second half but there's a bit of me that's proud of how we reacted, the first 10 minutes don't mean anything when you give goals away."

On Joao Gomes red card: "We never punish people for getting sent off, he's a player that plays on the edge, my first reflection is that he was moving around in a natural action and if he moved his foot, it's something he has to learn from. Our job as teammates is to protect him and make sure the same situation doesn't happen again."

On team transition: "A lot of teams in the league, those that were here, we feel like we're in strange positions but if you give goals away like that against any team, you'll be punished."

On Ollie Watkins: "It's a difficult one. He's been an amazing player and a record goal scorer. My job as captain is to get the best out of all the players who are here today. It's not easy coming here. I'm proud of the players that were here today and fought for the club."

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola speaking to Sky Sports: "It's the result you want, scoring in the last minute. I value that the players never gave up. I'm sure we had more chances, it's unfair they're winning very early and overall, I think we've had the better chances.

"We were probably in the first half not finishing anything, we had a lot of balls on the edge but we needed to shoot. We don't finish play and then they win on the counter-attack.

"The players coming from the bench gave us energy and you can feel the way we want to play.

"Overall, we played a lot in their half and had good moments and phases on the ball. The first goal was more difficult to defend, Anthony Elanga is a fast player. The second, I think we had the numbers but sometimes you have to finish the play and try and win the ball."

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton goalscorer Jack Hinshelwood, speaking to Match of the Day: "I thought they started quite well and we had to weather a bit of a storm for the first five. After that we brought a real intensity, energy and passion and it ended with us scoring four goals in the first half. A really good start."

On his two goals: "Credit to the boys. It was a really good start. After we scored a few, the confidence grew. We were dangerous every time we got the ball. The press was the main thing."

On the game being done and dusted at half-time: "They had to sit behind the ball with a man less, but the first half was really enjoyable and I've owed Villa a game like that for a while after my debut."

On setting the tone for the rest of the season: "Massive. We've laid the foundations now, we have set the bar and that's it now. We have set a really good standard but that needs to continue now."

Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Marc Guehi to Sky Sports on fans being surprised he played in midfield: "So was I. It was just an idea the manager had, we worked on it in the week. We're trying different things, trying different solutions for the team. I'm glad today it paid off in the end.

"I had a lot of help. Playing next to Elliot [Anderson] helped. It helps having guys experienced in that position to talk me through the game.

"It's difficult, they're a team that creates loads of space in midfield, they want to create one vs ones. We did well in the end to manage the challenges. The most important thing was to win the game.

"I'll do whatever the team asks me to do. It's for the team."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to Sky Sports: "We started the 10-15 minutes competing well. Then, I can't understand exactly why we lost in 20 minutes all the match and as well one player. We know football is not easy. In four years working here you have to work in difficult moments as well. Always we recover. The result is bad, we must try to correct. But the players didn't give up and kept going."

On Ollie Watkins' future: "This question is for him. Can you call him and make a question to him? Ask him. I only can answer it by silence. The players here show their commitment and that is really fantastic. This is the way."

On if it's disappointing to see it end like this: "We had it before in different moments, maybe five times. We are always moving forward and my responsibility is to find solutions. In the transfer window we have 10 days to find solutions."

On if it's difficult to do the transfer business he wants: "We are building the team. Last year and two years ago we were building the team in August."

On Joao Gomes' red card: "He apologised. I told him we made mistakes like he did today before. Always we came back. He knows it's difficult with his red card. The first yellow card is not fair. The referee could have had better balance."

Newcastle United

Newcastle winger Anthony Elanga, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Mixed emotions. It was a good performance. But disappointed to concede the way we did in the final seconds. To think the manager [Matthias Jaissle] has been here for just three weeks and we played like that out there, It's important we take the positives from this game and apply them in the next game."

On scoring at St James' Park: "Relief. Something I've wanted to do for a long time. I've been working hard for these moments, especially in the summer and after the World Cup. I wanted to work on my game and I took that opportunity. It was the first shot of the game. It was a moment I really wanted to take. The whole team played really well. If we can apply ourselves like that every single week, we are going to have a fantastic season.

On Jaissle: "Manager has been top since he has come in. The way he wants us to play, you can all see it on and off the ball. When we go, we really go for it. We could've finished off this game earlier as we created a lot of opportunities. But it's the first game. There are still 37 games left in the Premier League."

On playing under Jaissle: "It feels fun. Hopefully it looks fun for those watching. When I am on the pitch, I feel really good and that's the way I always want to feel. Thanks to the manager and his staff for instilling it in me and the rest of the team."
