It was a cunning plan! I said we'd struggle for goals & that I was worried. A mistaken Brighton fan.

    Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa

    Jobi McAnuff

I'm sure there will have been some concerns from Aston Villa fans today but I'm sure they won't have thought it would be as bad as this, down four goals and now their debutant Joao Gomes has been sent out.

A massive half time coming up for Unai Emery, everything that's gone out the door, the lack of leadership.

  9. CLOSE!published at 14:43 BST

Unai Emery just can't seem to believe what is happening as Brighton go close to adding a fifth, Maxim De Cuyper fizzing a low effort just wide having been left in loads of space inside the box.

It was a deep cross from Ruben Dias. Erling Haaland rises the highest and all he can do is flick it towards goal. I think it was going wide but the goalkeeper made the save.

Not unsurprising what’s happening here. Much like Newcastle, Villa have had their squad decimated over the summer. Expect a similar mauling for Newcastle against Liverpool later on this afternoon.

Better from City. Ruben Dias of all people whips in a cross which Erling Haaland flicks on, but Djorde Petrovic tips it behind at full stretch for a corner.

  15. RED CARD - João Gomes (Aston Villa)published at 14:40 BST

    Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa's nightmare first half gets worse.

The referee confirms that after a review João Gomes kicked out at his opponent and as a result is sent off.

Villa are 4-0 down and now down to 10 men. If this was a computer game Unai Emery would have hit the off button and restarted.

You can see why Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has been linked with a big money move to opposition Manchester City and Chelsea.

The City midfield have failed to get to grips on the Englishman, who is being allowed so much time and space in the middle of the park.
