I am afraid that the result is only papering over the cracks. Liverpool’s performance was shoddy, passing was way off, strikers non-existent - not a very good advert for the coming season.

  2. 'I value that the players never gave up'published at 19:14 BST

    FT: Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola speaking to Sky Sports: "It's the result you want, scoring in the last minute. I value that the players never gave up. I'm sure we had more chances, it's unfair they're winning very early and overall, I think we've had the better chances.

"We were probably in the first half not finishing anything, we had a lot of balls on the edge but we needed to shoot. We don't finish play and then they win on the counter-attack.

"The players coming from the bench gave us energy and you can feel the way we want to play.

"Overall, we played a lot in their half and had good moments and phases on the ball. The first goal was more difficult to defend, Anthony Elanga is a fast player. The second, I think we had the numbers but sometimes you have to finish the play and try and win the ball."

  3. 'We've laid the foundations now'published at 19:13 BST

    FT: Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton goalscorer Jack Hinshelwood, speaking to Match of the Day: "I thought they started quite well and we had to weather a bit of a storm for the first five. After that we brought a real intensity, energy and passion and it ended with us scoring four goals in the first half. A really good start."

On his two goals: "Credit to the boys. It was a really good start. After we scored a few, the confidence grew. We were dangerous every time we got the ball. The press was the main thing."

On the game being done and dusted at half-time: "They had to sit behind the ball with a man less, but the first half was really enjoyable and I've owed Villa a game like that for a while after my debut."

On setting the tone for the rest of the season: "Massive. We've laid the foundations now, we have set the bar and that's it now. We have set a really good standard but that needs to continue now."

  4. Guehi also surprised to play in midfieldpublished at 19:12 BST

    FT: Man City 2-1 Bournemouth

    Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Marc Guehi to Sky Sports on fans being surprised he played in midfield: "So was I. It was just an idea the manager had, we worked on it in the week. We're trying different things, trying different solutions for the team. I'm glad today it paid off in the end.

"I had a lot of help. Playing next to Elliot [Anderson] helped. It helps having guys experienced in that position to talk me through the game.

"It's difficult, they're a team that creates loads of space in midfield, they want to create one vs ones. We did well in the end to manage the challenges. The most important thing was to win the game.

"I'll do whatever the team asks me to do. It's for the team."

  6. 'We know football is not easy'published at 19:08 BST

    FT: Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to Sky Sports: "We started the 10-15 minutes competing well. Then, I can't understand exactly why we lost in 20 minutes all the match and as well one player. We know football is not easy. In four years working here you have to work in difficult moments as well. Always we recover. The result is bad, we must try to correct. But the players didn't give up and kept going."

On Ollie Watkins' future: "This question is for him. Can you call him and make a question to him? Ask him. I only can answer it by silence. The players here show their commitment and that is really fantastic. This is the way."

On if it's disappointing to see it end like this: "We had it before in different moments, maybe five times. We are always moving forward and my responsibility is to find solutions. In the transfer window we have 10 days to find solutions."

On if it's difficult to do the transfer business he wants: "We are building the team. Last year and two years ago we were building the team in August."

On Joao Gomes' red card: "He apologised. I told him we made mistakes like he did today before. Always we came back. He knows it's difficult with his red card. The first yellow card is not fair. The referee could have had better balance."

    Newcastle United

Newcastle winger Anthony Elanga, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Mixed emotions. It was a good performance. But disappointed to concede the way we did in the final seconds. To think the manager [Matthias Jaissle] has been here for just three weeks and we played like that out there, It's important we take the positives from this game and apply them in the next game."

On scoring at St James' Park: "Relief. Something I've wanted to do for a long time. I've been working hard for these moments, especially in the summer and after the World Cup. I wanted to work on my game and I took that opportunity. It was the first shot of the game. It was a moment I really wanted to take. The whole team played really well. If we can apply ourselves like that every single week, we are going to have a fantastic season.

On Jaissle: "Manager has been top since he has come in. The way he wants us to play, you can all see it on and off the ball. When we go, we really go for it. We could've finished off this game earlier as we created a lot of opportunities. But it's the first game. There are still 37 games left in the Premier League."

On playing under Jaissle: "It feels fun. Hopefully it looks fun for those watching. When I am on the pitch, I feel really good and that's the way I always want to feel. Thanks to the manager and his staff for instilling it in me and the rest of the team."

  8. 'More positives to take from Newcastle than negatives'published at 19:03 BST

The overview from Newcastle's position is that there was a fear. They have lost so many big players and you think what's going to happen?

You look at them here and there's plenty of energy. I see a real buy in from the players. There's young players who look like they're good enough and going to improve as well.

I think Newcastle fans will go away and think they're gutted again but in reality I think there's far more positives to take than negatives.

Brighton goalscorer Jack Hinshelwood, speaking to Sky Sports: "We started the game really well. We brought that energy, that intensity. We were very deserving of our four goals and it was a professional performance. You can do all the tactics you want in the week but if you don'r bring the energy and the passion, it means nothing. We got it spot on."

On importance of showing progression after players left over summer: "It's on us to step up, it's on me personally. I'm an experienced player in the changing room now and I need to step up and be similar for a lot of the boys. We need to replace the ones we have lost and we did that really well today. "I feel comfortable in the changing room and able to speak up and be a leader."

On how winning start helps new players settle in: "It gives us confidence now for the rest of the season. We have to use everything we did well to go again on Thursday and again on Sunday."

  10. 'We needed to finish the game'published at 18:59 BST

    FT: Man City 2-1 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Marco Rose to BBC Match of the Day: "It's really disappointing. At the end we needed to finish the game. We had many good moments, we suffered, we found triggers to win balls, we had chances. We reacted well to the difficult phases of the game. But at the end we had two situations where we defended not well enough. One corner kick where we got blocked and one situation we were just too passive around our box.

"It is what it is. I saw some really good efforts and the basics were all good. We now have to work on details to win these kinds of games away.

"It's always difficult here because you know how well they are in possession. We did many things in the right way but in the end maybe it was a question of power. But if you see the clock ticking and it's five minutes to go you need to stay active. You need to go forward and put them in uncomfortable situations. These are things we are going to speak about and we will try to do it better next time.

"All in all it was a good away game from us. But you want to make your fans happy. We didn't do that today but we will do it in the next games."

Happy to get a point against a better playing Newcastle. Lewis Hall fantastic, one mistake all game but on the other hand he gave the penalty and two points lost. On another note, is selling Gakpo really a priority?

Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa to Sky Sports: "It's rough, especially 30 seconds before the end of the game, but that's a huge step for us. That's the mentality we need to have through the season. The manager came three weeks ago and gave us a lot of information. Now we show on the pitch we are ready for the season. We needed this win to make a statement but in the end we draw. We have so much to work on."

On the pre-match display for Kevin Keegan: "What a special club, what a special man, that's why we gave him a big credit. The fans were unbelievable today. I think we gave them so much back today and that's what we need to give them all season.

"We know we needed to give the fans something after this period so that's why we tried to start fast. The fans pushed us until the end.

"It was my best [performance for Newcastle] so far. New manager, new role. I'm so pleased to be here. I hope today I showed I'm really happy."

On Newcastle's new manager Matthias Jaissle: "He's young, he's got a lot of energy. I'm really happy he's here. With the new role he's given me it's given me a lot of confidence. I'm one of the leaders so I need to back him. Because on the pitch you can't always hear him so I need to make sure the guys are on alert.

"The manager expects me to be a leader and lead the group. He wants me to be winning balls, making sure everyone is going forward, going for the kill, and sometimes just be calm. He wants me to keep up the energy. He wants a lot of energy and that's the role he gave to me and I am very happy."

  13. 'We will never give up'published at 18:52 BST

    FT: Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, speaking to Sky Sports, on scoring the late penalty: "To be honest, I didn't even hear the referee's whistle. I had to look at him if I can go. I was practicing a lot during the pre-season. We didn't have any penalties during games, but in training. We need to take the positivity of the first game and move on.

"More than 50,000 fans in the stadium against you. You can't hear your own voice. That's why I love football and that's why I am doing it.

"To come here is always tough. Everybody knows the [Newcastle] fans are unbelievable. They have a great team and a manager - new but he has proven himself in many other clubs. But we were prepared and we needed to be closer to each other under a new manager as well. We needed to know what was going on in the game. It's a good thing coming back into the game after 2-1 down.

"If I am honest, we should have won. But that's football. You don't win easy in the Premier League - doesn't matter who you play against. We have to be aware of that and we need to take care in the next game."

On what he has learned playing under Andoni Iraola: "That we will never give up. I can guarantee you that. We have to fight every time - all day long for 90 minutes. Everybody who came off the bench also made an impact as well today. We need the whole squad and we need to be ready."

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live at St James' Park

There wasn't a great deal in it but you can see the weaknesses that Liverpool had last season have not gone away. The defence doesn't look quite there. I would say Ronald Araujo came on and looked quite impressive. very, very powerful and very, very strong. He might be a massive part of the answer.

In terms of pace there is a problem there but going forward they need to be a little bit more creative. You need to get so much more out of Alexander Isak too.

On their way back home tonight, I think Liverpool will be content with that.

There's still plenty of work to do with the squad though Andoni Iraola knew that before a ball was kicked today.

But that late equaliser from Dominik Szoboszlai will do wonders for the spirit of the squad. A solid start to life in England for Victor Munoz too.
