It was initially impressive how Chelsea were playing with Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix in the team.

However, they increasingly lost control and it may have been in part due to the lack of physical conditioning of some of the returning World Cup stars.

Lacroix and Reece James began looking slow in this intense London heat having been out so long, while this wing-back system was getting exposed in the wide areas.

Being level at the interval is probably about right on the balance of the play.

It is very hot to be fair so it is pretty understandable that they are taking the break.

Xabi Alonso is coaching his team during it, along with new set-piece coach Austin MacPhee.

It looks like new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been doing some good work behind the scenes.

This 3-4-2-1 system looks solid but also a threat, adding Maxence Lacroix has made the defence look physically imposing.

Meanwhile, the balance of the front three just works with Morgan Rogers. This is no doubt the blueprint for Fulham away in nine days.

A lovely ball over the top and Joao Pedro is advancing at the near post, he squares the ball across but there's no one there to finish the move.

Chelsea win a corner and Austin MacPhee, the set piece coach Chelsea brought in from Aston Villa, gets up.

The corner comes to nothing. MacPhee sits back down.

Moises Caicedo hacks down Yangel Herrera in the middle of the park and gets a long talking to from the referee.

The last time Newcastle United played at St James' Park, in May, head coach Eddie Howe was in the dugout and Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon were all on the team sheet.

Quite a lot has changed.

Yet it is rather telling that new manager Matthias Jaissle ends his first set of programme notes by paying tribute to his predecessor.

"I must recognise the work of Eddie Howe before me for everything he achieved here," he writes before the friendly against Bayer Leverkusen.

"I wish Eddie and his staff nothing but success in the future and thank them for the work they put in before I arrived to leave the team in such a healthy position.

"Everybody speaks so highly of Eddie and I hope to build a similar connection with our supporters over time."

It's not the most inspired chant but Chelsea supporters are chanting "oh, Morgan Rogers".

It's an impressive crowd at Stamford Bridge as it is nearly full with a small section of away supporters.
