Highlights: Cliftonville come from behind to beat Carrick

Cliftonville came from a goal down to defeat Carrick Rangers 3-1 at Taylors Avenue and move into third place in the table.

The home side started brightly and Caleb Hawthorne, on his first start for Carrick, had them in front after 10 minutes.

However, the visitors responded positively and drew level five minutes later as Kyle McClelland headed home at the back post from a Ben Quinn corner.

Quinn's fine individual effort had them in front just after the half hour, before Dean McMaster made the points safe with a delightful free-kick in the closing stages.

Reds turn it around for back-to-back victories

A badly depleted home side made light of five enforced changes to take the lead after just 10 minutes.

Cliftonville failed to deal with a high ball into the box, allowing Aidan Steele to crash a volley off the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.

Hawthorne was quickest to react to the rebound, nipping in to steer the ball low under body of helpless Reds' keeper PJ Morrison from six yards.

The lead lasted barely five minutes as the visitors struck for the equaliser after a quarter of an hour.

Quinn's inswinging corner eluded everyone except Cliftonville defender McClelland, lurking at the back post, who had the simple task of heading into an unguarded net.

Cliftonville went in front for the first time just after the half hour thanks to a fine individual effort from the impressive Quinn.

Liam McStravick showed great awareness to spot the run of his team-mate, who waltzed his way past a number of defenders before slipping the ball past Gartside for his fourth goal in six games.

Carrick started the second half on the front foot and came within the width of a post of levelling as Steele's looping effort from a Kym Nelson cross rebounded off the woodwork with the goalkeeper beaten.

They did have the ball in the net just after the hour when Danny Gibson poked home after Joe Crowe's initial effort had been saved by Morrison, but the effort was ruled out for offside by a linesman.

All their efforts were in vain as Cliftonville struck for a decisive third goal in the dying minutes, McMaster curling home a beautifully struck free-kick from 25 yards, to make it back-to-back wins for Jim Magilton's side.

What the managers said

Cliftonville manager Jim Magilton: "They caused us lots of problems today but we scored at very good times which gives you a platform to go and play. Of course I can pick holes in our performance, I think we can be better with the ball, but all in all it's a good three points.

"For some of our young players it's maybe the first time that they've played here. It's a different experience and it's an ever growing project for us. The boys have been outstanding and they're going to learn from this."

Carrick Rangers manager Stephen Baxter: "When you've missed as many chances as we have - we've created five or six big chances - it's disappointing.

"The manner of the goals we've conceded is appalling. They weren't in our box that often, really.

"The manner of our performance was really good and to lose the game 3-1 probably suggests that Cliftonville were quite a bit ahead of us but it wasn't that way at all in my estimation.

"We were very competitive all around the park and were banging on the door the whole of the second half looking for an equaliser but didn't get it and then the free-kick takes the game away from us in the last minute."
