A day of attrition for England with the ball as New Zealand piled on the runs, although the hosts got a late boost.

New Zealand went from 317-0 to 361-4 at stumps.

Ben Stokes roared in celebration after that mammoth stand by Devon Conway and Tom Latham was broken.

In addition to Devon Conway's 157 there was a sparkling 151 from New Zealand captain Tom Latham as they shared 317 for the first wicket.

It was just one of those days were England needed to keep going. They got their rewards in the last two overs by keeping with their mindset.

You can see by Ben Stokes' celebration just how much those late wickets meant.

New Zealand batter Devon Conway speaking to Sky Sports: "Great day for us, nice to build a partnership with Tom. Pretty happy with the way things have gone.

"We knew that the wicket was going to be quite nice. It was important for us to put pressure on the bowling.

"I still felt a little out of sorts at times. I've been struggling with my pre-movement at times, but it was nice to get through those moments. I was trying out keeping my back foot still as I was getting it in too late. I tried for the first three balls and scratched that and went back, just trying to move earlier.

"I don't know quite what par is, but a bit disappointing to lose two wickets at the end. We've still got plenty of batters in the shed, hopefully we can kick on and build partnerships."

On travelling home to see his new-born baby: "It was a long trip, but I'm really glad I was allowed to go back and see the little one. Tom did whisper in my ear he wanted to see the baby celebration."

The MCC have actually changed Law 12.5.2 so that the final over of a day's play will not end if there is a wicket but will continue until the last over has been completed.

However, that will not come into effect until October.

This is where cricket is a real shame. The last over of the day and you take a wicket, when you have just gained momentum.

It's still been New Zealand's day but a tired England will head into the dressing room with the spirits lifted a little.

The fans at Trent Bridge who have stayed until the bitter end are treated to a glorious cover drive from Henry Nicholls off Gus Atkinson.
