Not a cloud in the sky at Trent Bridge. Most of the fans have left the stands to seek a bit of shade during the lunch break.

Definitely a day for slip, slap, slop as the great Richie Benaud used to say in his familiar mellow tones.

Alas, the identities of those involved in sweetgate must remain anonymous. Shouldn't stop you making an educated guess, Ciaran.

It's been steady going for New Zealand. Tom Latham has been more compact about the way that he's played the ball. He's allowed it to come to him and he's played the ball. He's had a bit of fortune at third slip area, other than that he's looked pretty solid. Whereas Devon Conway is pushing out a little bit more.

    Thanks, Mike.

Been a lot of chit chat about curfews so had to share an amusing story I was told in the last couple of weeks about another England curfew broken.

It occurred at an U13 north of England selection camp in the early 2000s held at a school near York, which included some players who would later go on to play international cricket.

A group of these youngsters broke an evening curfew...and sneaked up to a nearby garage to stock up on sweets, crisps and chocolate.

Unbeknownst to the group a fellow player, who would later make his name with Yorkshire, decided to snitch to the coaches on the 'garage crew' curfew breakers.

    Slightly more innocent times.

One more boundary before the interval as Tom Latham gets on top of a Ben Stokes short ball and pulls it through backward square for four.

That's the lunch break. Very much New Zealand's session, although England haven't bowled especially badly - it's just a batter's day.

Here's Timothy Abraham to take you through the next session.

The last time England conceded more than 100 runs to New Zealand in the first session on day one of a Test was in June 2022, at the very start of the Bazball era, at the same venue.

Most runs conceded by England on day one session one - Bazball era:

    • 108-2 vs New Zealand, Trent Bridge, 2022
    • 107-2 vs Australia, Old Trafford, 2023
    • 103-0 vs New Zealand, Trent Bridge, 2026 (today)

A couple more singles off Shoaib Bashir as we approach lunch.

We'll get one more over in, and Ben Stokes is going to bowl it.

  9. NZ 101-0published at 26 overs

    Pow, hundred up.

Devon Conway faces five dot balls from Ben Stokes then crashes his final delivery past a diving gully for four.

That's the century partnership too, of course.

  10. NZ 97-0published at 25 overs

Three more singles off Shoaib Bashir.

He may not have bowled in the first Test at Lord's but given the conditions I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of overs from Bashir in this match.

Only once before have England failed to take a wicket in the first session on day one of a Test in the Bazball era - against India in Manchester in 2025, when India scored 78-0.

  12. NZ 94-0published at 24 overs

Oooh, a touch risky after reaching his fifty.

Tom Latham sends a shot flying over the top of the cordon for four - that wasn't where he was aiming to send it, but they all count.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Tom Lathampublished at 23.1 overs

    NZ 90-0

Tom Latham is the first of New Zealand's openers to bring up his half century.

He takes two square off Ben Stokes' first delivery, reaching his fifty from 65 deliveries.

The New Zealand captain knocks his bat together with Devon Conway before the two shake hands - that's the first time Latham's reached this landmark in the series.

  14. NZ 88-0published at 23 overs

Three more runs off Shoaib Bashir.

We've got just over 15 minutes until the interval, with the players no doubt looking forward to some air conditioning.

New Zealand have a won a good toss. You get the sense England need a win this week.

Used to play in the annual cricket tournament in Eymet, France. Cooled off under the sprinklers every 10 overs. Usually mid 30s to 40s. Teams from Spain, France, Italy and the UK present.

    Jack, Haverhill

Second hottest day was MCG 2025. Only 22 degrees but the heat coming off those fuming Aussies kept me nice and warm all day

    Scott, Melbourne

Melbourne Cricket Ground, January 2003. 46 degrees - insane. Shane Warne sizzled too and demolished England in the ODI, with a young James Anderson the last to be skittled out.

    Stuart, Beckenham

  18. NZ 85-0published at 22 overs

Ben Stokes pitches up another delivery and once again Devon Conway drives it to the boundary.

This time the ball heads through mid-wicket for Conway's sixth four of the innings - two thirds of his runs have come from boundaries.

Tim informs me that the ground in the Cayman Islands has now moved because they had to build a radio tower over the square.

But I'm sure you all knew that.

Six runs off Shoaib Bashir's over, with both openers taking a two in the off side.

Hottest day for me was the 1991 fifth Ashes Test at Perth. 45.8 was recorded on the opening day and having flown from Heathrow at -11 degrees it was quite a shock, as was an England defeat inside four days for Graham Gooch’s side.

    Philip, Germany

Hottest. 2018/19 baking in Bridgetown, England skittled for 77 all out, spent the afternoon on Carlisle Bay, very bittersweet...

    Darren, Hazel Grove

Played regularly in Cayman Islands when temperature was in excess of 30 degrees. Pitch was at start of airport runway. Play was suspended for several minutes when the 1.30 flight from Houston used to arrive. Back draft would knock you over.
