Old Grey Whistle Test 40 Ep 12/16

Wednesday 9 November
10.00-11.00pm BBC RADIO 2

Bob Harris continues to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the classic music TV show, this week looking back to the series which began in September 1982.

There's a distinctive Scottish air to this 12th episode with new live sessions from Edwyn Collins and Midge Ure. Both men remember their Whistle Test experience with their respective groups, Orange Juice and Ultravox. And Simple Minds' Jim Kerr joins Bob in the studio to talk about the group's appearances on the programme.

Dave Stewart recalls not only the Eurythmics' performance during the short series that ran in the spring of 1983, but also his appearances prior to this as a member of The Tourists. Among the archive music are songs by Orange Juice, Rab Noakes, Simple Minds and Eurythmics.

Listen To The Band

Wednesday 9 November
9.30-10.00pm BBC RADIO 2

Tonight's show features The Unthanks with The Brighouse and Rastrick Band. Frank Renton presents this unique and fascinating collaboration between a top folk group and one of the world's most famous brass bands.

In this, the first of two programmes, they play traditional and original pieces as first performed at Brass: Durham International Festival. Known for their timeless, unsentimental and quietly subversive tales, siblings Rachel and Becky Unthank are joined by other band members: singers Chris Price and Niophe Keegan and pianist arranger composer Adrian McNally.

The concert was conducted by Sandy Smith, who also talks about how the two musical styles work together.

Symphony Question Time Ep 1/6

New series
Wednesday 9 November
8.20-8.40pm BBC RADIO 3

Sue Perkins and Tom Service unravel everything listeners ever wanted to know about the symphony – but were too afraid to ask.

They attempt to blow away the myths and unpick the mysteries surrounding this most venerable form, with a host of musical excerpts from Haydn to Hovhaness, Mozart to Mahler, Beethoven to Berio.

Over the next six weeks Sue and Tom explore questions including how the symphony first originated; whether a symphony should be about logic and form, or be an encapsulation of the whole world; and why people get so snippy when others clap between the movements.

In today's episode, they look at the roots of the symphony – the idea of a "sounding together" – and try to pin down who wrote the first one, before getting to grips with the so-called "father of the symphony'", "Papa" Josef Haydn. They also invite listeners to send in their own questions for their perusal later in the series.

Wednesday 9 November
2.15-3.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Giving It Back is a comedy about Johnny, a small-time thief, who decides to return everything he has ever stolen.

Written by Kevin Dyer, this comedy tells the story of Johnny (Gareth Milton) who has a change of heart after a burglary goes wrong.
