Sounds Of The 20th Century Ep 32/50

Thursday 10 November
10.00-11.00pm BBC RADIO 2

Jeremy Vine reaches 1982 in BBC Radio 2's audio journey through five decades of triumph, tragedy and trivia. He introduces a collage of the music, news, people and programmes – as they were heard at the time – without any commentary, analysis, or hindsight.

It's a year dominated by the Falklands War. There's a new royal prince, the Pope's visit to Britain and an epic battle at Wimbledon; plus the launch of a new TV channel and a big success for Arthur Daley and Boy George.

Afternoon Play – The State Of Water

Thursday 10 November
2.15-3.00pm BBC RADIO 4

A Welsh family is fiercely divided over the future of its sheep farm in this Afternoon Play by Sarah Woods.

Eldryd (Phyl Harries) and his daughter, Siwan (Mali Harries), are sheep farmers but Siwan's radical ideas about eco-management are driving a wedge between them.

Prices are better than they have been but it's a hard, physical life that increasing age doesn't make any easier. Still, Eldryd loves this landscape and the life, the raw beauty, the wide horizons, the solitude.

Then Siwan hears about a scheme which helps sheep farmers to give up their animals and become eco-stewards of their landscape.

For Eldryd the answer is a simple no to the new scheme. For Siwan, this new way of life might offer her a future. Sarah Woods's new play looks at the debate between sheep farming and eco-management through the experience of one family.
