Aled Jones With Good Morning Sunday

Sunday 5 September
6.00-9.00am BBC RADIO 2

John McCarthy stands in for Aled Jones and says Good Morning Sunday to author and broadcaster Ian Clayton. Every parent's worst nightmare became a reality for Ian when, on a short holiday, he took his nine-year-old twins canoeing. In a freak and tragic accident, his daughter, Billie, drowned. Now one of Penguin's lead authors, Ian's latest book, Our Billie, is not a story of bitterness and recrimination but an account of how a family attempts to come to terms with something which makes no sense at all.

The programme's faith guest this week is Rabbi Pete Tobias who tells listeners about the Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashanah – and also provides the Moment Of Reflection.

Sunday Half Hour

Sunday 5 September
8.30-9.00pm BBC RADIO 2

Women have been at the heart of the life of the Christian church since it began. However, there have been times when their role has often been marginalised or, worse still, ignored. This week, Brian D'Arcy looks at women's contribution to Christian thought and worship through hymns, prayer and reflection.

Music comes from choirs gathered in Wells Cathedral, directed by Matthew Owens with Jonathan Vaughn on organ. Hymns include Tell Out My Soul, And Did Those Feet and New Every Morning.

BBC PROMS 2010
Prom 67 – Last Night Of The Proms 1910

Live event/outside broadcast
Sunday 5 September
2.30-6.30pm BBC RADIO 3

Sara Mohr-Pietsch introduces the first of two concerts paying tribute to Proms founder conductor Sir Henry Wood. Paul Daniel joins the BBC Concert Orchestra in a recreation of Sir Henry's mammoth Last Night Of The Proms from 1910, live from London's Royal Albert Hall.

The concert opens with Wagner's overture to his opera, The Flying Dutchman, and goes on to include a range of music: Dvořák's Humoresque in G flat major, orchestrated by Wood; excerpts from Bizet's L'Arlésienne suites; and Elgar's Pomp And Circumstance March No. 4.

A short cello piece has been substituted this afternoon by a BBC commission, continuing Wood's commitment to new works. David Matthews's Dark Pastoral is based on a small fragment of a Cello Concerto by Vaughan Williams.

This Prom is also broadcast on BBC Four on Thursday 9 September at 7.30pm.

Twenty Minutes – The Barley Bird

Sunday 5 September
4.45-5.05pm BBC RADIO 3

In Suffolk, the Nightingale is called the Barley Bird, as its arrival coincides with the sprouting of the barley. Acclaimed nature writer Richard Mabey, a long-time devotee of the bird, reads extracts from his new book, The Barley Bird, and muses on how this mysterious and elusive bird has inspired poets and musicians across the centuries. He recalls too the famous series of annual outside broadcasts made by cellist Beatrice Harrison and her accompanist – a nightingale in her garden.

The Reunion Ep 3/5

New series
Sunday 5 September
11.15am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4

Sue MacGregor gathers together the participants from the controversial Miss World 1970 beauty contest, broadcast live by the BBC to more than 24 million viewers.

In 1970, the Miss World contest held at the Royal Albert Hall in London was disrupted by feminists protesting that the competition was a cattle market. Bob Hope, presenting the event, was pelted with tomatoes and flour bombs on stage – and bouncers were sprayed with blue ink. The women disrupting the competition shouted: "We're not beautiful, we're not ugly, we're angry!"

The Women's Liberation Movement's protests at the Miss World contest were not solely aimed at rejecting the event itself, but more at the implications of the wider exploitation of women in society. Economically and socially, women were subject to continual discrimination and they felt that the epitome of such prejudice was highlighted by this public celebration of female beauty.

The programme looks at the event through the eyes of the participants who were involved both on and off stage. It examines their motives for participating in the protest and how those organising the event and taking part as contestants felt about the contest.

Sue is joined by former Miss World of 1970 Jennifer Hosten; one of the key organisers, Peter Jolley; and protestors Sally Alexander and Jo Robinson.

Crazy For Love – Layla And The Mad Poet

Sunday 5 September
4.30-5.00pm BBC RADIO 4

The inspiration for Eric Clapton's seminal pop song, Layla And Majnun, is said to be the most beautiful poem in the Arab world and beyond. Anthony Sattin tells the tale.

Pre-empting Romeo And Juliet by centuries, Layla And Majnun is the classic Middle Eastern love story. Sitting at the heart of pre-Islamic Arab culture, its message is universal and it has since crossed borders and transcended language barriers, even spreading as far as India and Turkey.

The story is based on a tale of thwarted love and poetry sent on the wind and Anthony tells the tale of its creator, Majnun – whose name is the word for "mad" or "crazy" in Arabic – and tries to find out if he, or the object of his love, were real or imagined, fact or fiction.

BLITZ SEASON
The Blitz – Plymouth Ep 1/6

New series
Sunday 5 to Friday 10 September
7.45-8.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Angela Rippon visits her hometown to find out how the Blitz affected Plymouth
Angela Rippon visits her hometown to find out how the Blitz affected Plymouth

In the first of a series of programmes telling stories of the Blitz from across the UK, Angela Rippon is in her hometown of Plymouth to find out how the city's children lived through the terror of the air raids that Plymouth endured from the summer of 1940.

The scene is set by Terry Charman, senior historian at the Imperial War Museum, who explains that, at the start of the Second World War, Plymouth was not considered to be a likely target for aerial attacks, so many children remained there throughout the conflict.

Angela meets some of the people who survived the most ferocious bombing attacks in the spring of 1941. She hears about how they coped with the terror of the bombing, the nights in the shelters and even the loss of members of their own families.

Angela also travels to the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, where she is given a unique insight into how schools tried to carry on as normal during the air raids. The city has an extraordinary collection of logs kept by schools that detail all the events of daily life during the years when Plymouth was under attack.

In these books, listeners discover accounts of the children being sent to the shelters because of an air attack; the strain on teachers and pupils alike caused by the bombing; and records of poor attendance caused by the Blitz. But normal life goes on, with records also of exams and school inspections. The logs provide a moving account of how Plymouth's schools did their best to provide some kind of normality for their children.

The series continues every day this week at 10.45am.

This programme is part of a season of special programmes on BBC Radio 4 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Blitz.

Continuing to establish itself as the Desert Island Discs for music fans, Matt Everitt's The First Time features the formidable Alison Goldfrapp and her amiable musical partner, Will Gregory. Matt traces the key moments in the duo's career – from Alison's formative years as a stage-struck singer with Orbital and Tricky, through to how the couple forged a musical marriage that blended Carmina Burana and Kraftwerk – and on to Alison's emergence as a front woman who combined her music with a theatricality and visual flair that hadn't been seen since Bowie's heyday.
