Have you ever taken part in a junior Parkrun?

Thousands of children do, but the charity Parkrun wants even more of you to get involved.

Organisers are aiming to get 39,000 school children to sign up to their Parkrun Primary programme.

Around 2,500 schools are already signed up to the programme which links primary schools to local junior Parkruns.

Organisers say it aims to help childen be active and to support their wellbeing.

What is a parkrun?

Parkruns are popular with lots of adults and young people - they get together once a week to run a 2km or 5km distance in a local park.

The Parkrun charity say there are around 500 free junior events for children across the UK, where kids can take part in 2km runs with friends and family.

So why do parkrun want more children involved?

This programme aims to increase physical activity levels for primary school kids.

Research published last year by the University of Bath found only in in three (30%) of pupils do the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity during school hours.

James Thomas, who's a manager at parkrun, says it's all getting more children active and trying to "create healthy habits that can last a lifetime".
