Get ready for the new WSL season

Calling all football fans, the new Women's Super League (WSL) season is here.

And, if the last one is anything to go by, it's set to be another exciting contest.

Manchester City became champions for the first time in ten years - ending Chelsea's run of six straight titles.

And there's plenty more to look out for, from superstar signings to a new-look WSL table.

So, what exactly can we expect to see this season? Keep reading to find out.

A busy summer transfer window saw several teams make some big signings.

Perhaps the biggest of all came from London City Lionesses, who signed Alexia Putellas, one of the world's best players on a three year contract.

Putellas left Barcelona at the end of last season after 14 years with the Spanish side, where she became one of the most successful players in the history of the women's game.

She will be joined at London City by new team-mate Mary Earps, who returns to the WSL after two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain.

Lioness Georgia Stanway signed for Arsenal from German giants Bayern Munich.

While Katie McCabe made a shock move from the Gunners to London rivals Chelsea.

Manchester City won the Women's Super League in May, finishing four points above Arsenal - it was City's second title - and their first one in ten years.

However, they'll certainly have plenty of competition to retain the trophy.

Since 2015, Arsenal and Chelsea have finished in the top three every season and Chelsea won six league titles in a row between 2019 and 2025, so both will be aiming to push City all the way again this time around.

But the title race could have a few surprises in store.

Manchester United have a new manager in Eva Olid, while London City Lionesses have made a number of big signings to strengthen their squad.

Could another team upset the usual title contenders and lift the trophy next May?

For the first time in WSL history, three new clubs are joining the top division, having all been promoted from the WSL 2.

Birmingham City and Crystal Palace return to the WSL after automatic promotion.

And Charlton Athletic make their top-flight debut after beating Leicester City in last season's play-off.

This year's WSL is bigger than ever before, growing from 12 to 14 teams and promotion and relegation are also changing next year.

At the end of the coming season, the WSL team in last place will be automatically relegated, and the team that comes top of the WSL 2 will be automatically promoted.

But - there will be one other big change.

In the WSL 2, the teams that come second and third will face each other to decide who will join a WSL play-off match.

That winner of that match will then play the WSL team that finishes in 13th position (second to bottom).

The winner of that final play-off match will play in the WSL in the 2027-28 season.
