Stephen Watson and the BBC Newsline 6 in 6 van

We’re almost at the starting line!

Over 2000 miles already by van, train and boat. And that’s just to get to Rome to kick off this BBC Newsline special series.

Since my blog yesterday we’ve travelled through heavy rain, thick fog, and snow to leave France en route to Italy. The journey took us past the French Alps, with some stunning scenery along the twisty roads, as we headed through the impressive Mont Blanc tunnel which links the two countries.

Watch a short video of this part of our trip.

I have also posted some photographs of us posing along the way, including one of me repacking our luggage. I left the boot open as we drove out of a service station and the cases fell out! Thankfully a truck driver waved us down to tell us!

After another few hours behind the wheel we stopped in Genova at around 11 pm last night, before getting on the road early this morning. It’s a five hour drive winding our way through dozens and dozens of tunnels, hugging the breathtaking Mediterranean coastline. It’s a truly incredible road, and well worth a trip. I know a few bikers who have made the journey, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Speaking of bikers, I received some photos on my mobile last night of two friends stuck on the Stena Ferry in Stranraer! Well known racer Marty Nutt and the retired North West 20 specialist John Creith, like many other passengers, were stranded for over 24 hours and taken to safety by the fire brigade. At least our journey has been a little smoother so far.

Tonight on BBC Newsline at 6.30 we’ll be reporting from Rome, hopefully broadcasting live outside the Vatican. I’ll update you when we arrive.

Guys, this seems like the biggest, most pointless jolly by a local BBC sports team that I can ever remember. At our expense! Sure, it's bound to be a great experience for you, but it seems irrelevant, if not pointless, and certainly a complete waste of money in these difficuly times. And I'm a huge 6 Nations fan, by the way, but honestly, this just feels wrong, like pure self-indulgence.
