The world's largest penguin colony has lost its accolade.

世界最大的企鹅群落已经失去了 “最大” 这一头衔。

Zavodovski – a remote volcanic island near Antarctica has lost more than half a million chinstrap penguins since 2011. That's over a quarter of all penguins on the island.

扎瓦多夫斯基岛是南极洲附近的一座偏远火山岛，自 2011 以来，岛上的帽带企鹅已减少超过 50 万只。这相当于全岛企鹅总数的四分之一以上。

Scientists say their food supply's been disrupted by climate-driven changes in the Southern Ocean.

科学家表示，由气候变化引发的南冰洋环境变化扰乱了这些企鹅的食物来源。

Macaroni penguins also live in the region. Their numbers have increased and stabilised on Zavodovski.

马卡罗尼企鹅也生活在这一地区。在扎瓦多夫斯基岛上，它们的数量有所增长并趋于稳定。

They have a broader diet and have been foraging in an area with warmer waters, likely finding alternative foods.

But as for chinstrap penguins, there's concern their decline on the island and elsewhere could tip them into becoming an endangered species.
