North Valley Girls League Cup FinalAGSA A 3-2 Myerscough (aet)This turned out to be one of the best games of the season and a good advert for girls football in the county as two of the top teams met in the Cup final. Honours were even over the season as both teams had one win apiece so it was never going to be an easy game. The weather was hot so the use of subs was going to be an important part of the game. It was a tight first half - both sides had chances but it was AGSA who scored first a cross from Vicky B came in from the left wing and fell at the feet of Carrie I who slotted home to make it 1-0. More chances came for both sides with Lucy C in the AGSA goal making some crucial fingertip saves. The second half continued in the same way with both sides still playing good football. With players starting to get tired manager Chadwick changed his players round, this let in Myerscough who scored two quick goals to make it 2-1. With the girls behind Chadwick sent on sub Courtney P & with three mins remaining a corner came in and Courtney P scored at the back post to take it to extra time. Both teams now looking tired kept going and the first period of extra time ended still 2-2. Some of the stronger players who had been rested came back on and it paid off. A long ball from Player of the Match Laura S sent Carrie through on goal and with some neat footwork she slotted the ball home. Myerscough kept pushing but couldn't get past the AGSA keeper. Three mins later the final whistle and the girls celebrated a glorious yet hard fought win. ---- North Valley Cup Final - Under 16s:AGSA 2 Lammack 3 (aet)What can we say about this performance other than that famous old football phrase - "We were robbed!". Lammack started the brighter terrorising our defence with their pace but failing to make any serious effort on goals. It took 10 minutes for AGSA to compose themselves and start taking control of the game with Heather B and Kelly W pulling the strings in midfield. However, Lammack took the lead when a scramble in the penalty area led to a clearance off the line - the linesman decided it had crossed (though independent confirmation said that it was nowhere near!). We took that on the chin and started to impose ourselves on the game and a through ball from Heather to Keara B saw the Lammack defender push Keara over but they all missed the ball and it trickled into the corner of the net. The half time whistle came too soon, though, as AGSA pressed relentlessly. Second half started the way of the first and a mix up in defence let the ball run free to an unmarked Lammack player who scuffed their shot into the corner. AGSA piled on the pressure, reducing Lammack to attacks on the break, one of which saw Naomi tip the ball over brilliantly. AGSA were playing some lovely flowing football - especially down the right wing. A ball inside to Heather, she turned skipped past one player and was brought down by the next about 2 yards outside the penalty area. Amy stepped up like last week and hit a great free kick onto the underside of the bar, and Demi R coolly slotted the rebound. 2 - 2 and full time came too soon again. Extra time beckoned and though it was a warm day, the girls were up for it. However, mid way through the first period, the most shocking decision of the century cost us the game. Lammack got the ball in midfield and lumped it forward where two players were coming back at least 3 yards offside. One took the ball and as she had all the time in the world lobbed the keeper, in off the post. From then on, the girls heads went down and every decision went against us. Demi came close to equalising again but that was the end of it. Player of the match was easily Michelle B who had another outstanding game. ----The views expressed on this page are those of the contributor and the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the BBC. |
