Boz's profile..."I am Barbara/Boz Phillips, a multi-media and digital video artist. Mainly I work as a community artist here in Blackpool, facilitating workshops and classes from jewellery making to video production. Most recently I worked with Revoe and Park Schools, Blackpool to produce two short video loops for projection on to work they made with international artist Yuji Watatbe. In 2006 I created digital images for a book project, ‘Getting Our Heads Together’, that explored the experiences of people affected by mental health issues; working with, amongst others, Blackpool MIND, New Directions and the Sixth Form College. I take inspiration to create fictions, simulations and simulacra from real stories and characters that I have encountered. For example ‘Annie – Caught Red Handed’ was inspired by an elderly lady, whom I supported during my time as a CSW for the Social Services, who loved cake and sweets. Artistically I am motivated by contemporary issues such as mental well being, genetic modification, and economic materialism. I make non-digital work incorporating all of these elements: Self made printing blocks in various materials, self made, or marbled papers, screen prints, photographs, various found/collected papers, vintage printing blocks, cut outs, photographs and objects. I also make digital video and photography, utilising some of these elements to create digital video, animations, or special effects. Most of the non-digital 2D work I exhibit is in the form of limited edition print runs of one or very occasionally two. My 3D mixed-media assemblages often reflect social issues, incorporating elements of my jewellery making skills that utilise mixed medias. I am currently involved in an international art exchange. I create music, experimental, narrative, and documentary style digital videos. In 2005 I was commissioned by the illuminations department, to make a ‘Short History of The Illuminations, with a local theatre group. I have also shown my video work in London and in Europe. In March 2007 I will be showing new work in Ansdell, Lytham St Annes, as part of the c.art.ed art project. I regularly collaborate with the artist-run gallery, Blott Artist Studios, 53 King St, Blackpool. In 2006 I set-up and curated two short film and video screenings of independent, UK and European artist and film makers work." |
