Pancake Tuesday

Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday as it is properly known, falls on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which marks the first day of Lent.

Watch this clip for a one-to-one cooking lesson with Brian (Danny Minnie) Ó Domhnaill, in which he teaches the SRL presenters the perfect pancake recipe in preparation for Pancake Tuesday, then go and test it out at home!

The word Shrove comes from the Old English word ‘Shrive’, which means to confess, alluding to the tradition in the Middle Ages by which people confessed their sins on Shrove Tuesday so that they could start Lent forgiven and absolved from sin.

It was not simply a day of penitence, but also one of celebration, as people prepared for the abstinence of Lent by having great feasts and playing games. The tradition of pancakes grew out of the need to use up fats, cream and eggs before the start of Lent because they were not allowed to be eaten during the holy period.
