Supporting socio-economic diversity

To ensure that apprentices and employees from less advantaged backgrounds thrive at the BBC, we offer a range of support.

Overview

The BBC is for everyone and our content needs to represent all of the audiences we serve. To ensure we do this and provide value for all audiences, our teams must have people with different backgrounds, experiences and ideas. Currently 20% of our workforce identify as coming from a working-class background. Our ambition is to increase that representation.

To ensure that apprentices and employees from less advantaged backgrounds thrive at the BBC, we offer a range of support.

"We’re committed to a BBC where everyone feels that they belong. Being able to represent our audience is mission critical to us. It allows us to serve everyone with unique and high impact content that they feel is truly relevant to them. As a leader who originated from a working class background, I’m delighted to be the HR champion for the RAISED network. This community of talented colleagues from working class backgrounds is just one of the resources awaiting you if you’re considering a career here. We want you to know that the BBC is for you. It’s a place where we want you to celebrate who you are and what you have to offer."

Sarah, HR Director, People Experience

"Having grown up with the BBC as a staple in my household, I was buzzing when I found out I was going to be working here. I did have thoughts about the lack of diversity and how I would fit into an industry that didn't represent me, however even when I was an apprentice and then a journalist, I was valued and my opinions were taken on board. I never thought I would thrive in this world, but I am absolutely loving it, and I'm able to get more under-represented voices heard."

BBC RAISED - Staff network

RAISED (Real Action In Social and Economic Diversity) is the BBC’s sociable and supportive employee network established to promote the interests of working-class audiences and colleagues at the BBC. It was established in 2018 and is an active network open to all employees with over 1000 members across all parts of the BBC.

To ensure that employees from less advantaged backgrounds thrive at the BBC, the RAISED network support one another in the following ways:

  • RAISED buddy scheme

The chance to pair up with a more experienced colleague from a similar background, who’ll help you to navigate the BBC as a new joiner. They’ll be a work-friend, ally and champion, offering support, guidance and signposting.

  • Monthly coffee break

A chance to chat and network with like-minded people from across the BBC.

  • Regular hub meetings and virtual events

Meet up with colleagues in some of our RAISED hubs across the UK in Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, London, Salford and Birmingham.

"Before I joined I had quite a stereotypical view of the BBC, especially the newsroom. I was surprised that people were so warm and welcoming, and had a lot of patience with me, helping me to learn the ropes whatever department / was in. My advice to anyone joining the BBC would be to not overthink it as it can get in the way of you contributing as confidently as you truly want."

Ayoola, Journalist, BBC Radio 4
