It wasn't looking good for Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid as the British pair found themselves a set and a break down.

However, they have just broken back at the first time of asking against Spain's Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren of the Netherlands on Court 11.

This second set is back in the balance. Will the British duo be able to force a decider?

Alex Zverev hit double the number of double faults as Karen Khachanov tonight - six to three.

But he hit 15 aces to the Russian's six, and had an average second serve speed of 112mph - nearly 20mph quicker than his opponent.

That serve dug Zverev out of several holes, and set him up for the win.

"In practice I started feeling the ball better, and then moving forward I was playing much better tennis. I obviously have improved a bit otherwise I would not be in the US Open final.

"Sometimes things just go your way, I have had a lot of struggles at the major level and I was so close so many times - and maybe this year God has said this is going to be my year and to enjoy my time on the court. I am enjoying it, I love playing these big finals and I can't wait for Sunday."

British duo Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid are going to have to do it the hard way if they're to claim a sixth US Open title in the men's wheelchair doubles.

The top seeds have just lost the first set 6-2 to Spain's Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren of the Netherlands on Court 11.

De la Puente and Spaargaren won six games on the trot to take the opening set.

But Hewett and Reid did come from behind to win yesterday's huge semi-final against defending champions Argentina's Gustavo Fernandez and Tokito Oda and they're going to need to do it again.

Alexander Zverev will play an American in Sunday's final - either eighth seed Ben Shelton or 11th seed Frances Tiafoe.

He will not have the crowd's support, but Zverev will start as heavy favourite to win a second Grand Slam of the year.

It will be his third straight Slam final, after the French Open (won) and Wimbledon (lost).

Zverev has just got better and better the more the tournament has gone on. His wobbles were at the beginning of the tournament and since then he has got better.

Today every time he faced questions and problems he really stepped up to the plate and served spectacularly.

Karen Khachanov is cheered from the court, and signs a few autographs as he exits Flushing Meadows.

Khachanov led in the tie-breaks in both the second and third set. On another day he could have taken this the full distance.

He did so well to reach the last four and will shoot back up the rankings as a result of this run - but he has unquestionably missed some big opportunities today.

Where did that come from? I know the way Zverev has been serving has been enormous but what a moment to come out with that.

It was Zverev's 15th and final ace of the match.

I think Khachanov is going to be feeling the pressure because when the going gets tough, it has been Zverev that has been locking down.

Zverev into the net. 2-5. He is playing like a man under pressure, against Khachanov who is hitting with no concerns at all.

But Zverev, after being forced back by an attempted lob, hits a stunning cross court winner of his own. His 37th winner of the match. 3-5.

Khachanov wide, 4-5.

The Russian has two points on serve. Win both and we go to a fourth set.

Oh my goodness, it had to be that good. He was clubbing the ball and hurling himself on it just to get that extra power onto it. Perfection.

That was very tentative from Zverev.

Karen Khachanov has won 13 of 14 possible points at the net. He doesn't visit often, but when he does he does it well.

And he's playing brilliantly from the back of the court too, a huge forehand strike into the back corner and he celebrates like a nonchalant gladiator to the baying crowd.

As in set two, this match has really come alive in the tie break.
