1. Scotland 'be better for 80 minutes' - Townsendpublished at 18:59 BST

    FT: South Africa 42-28 Scotland

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells ITV: "We're really frustrated we didn't get more points on the board in the first half and that period when the Boks go down to 14 men.

"I'm massively proud of the effort we put in, but it wasn't to be today. It's a learning for us, we've got to be better for 80 minutes.

"There's a lot more in us, and with the amount of opportunities the players created today through work skill and intelligence, we've got to take more to beat the world champions.

"We don't get to play South Africa very often, we don't get to play them here, so that'll be the feeling tonight. Today was another step forward."

South Africa are the world champions for a reason, they find ways to win games. They gave Scotland opportunities and Scotland didn't take them.

We gave 21 easy-ish points away. But at times, Scotland were magnificent. They created so many opportunities, which is good. We could have scored seven or eight tries.

We scored four, created enough opportunities for more. But we still lost a game we could have won. Not saying we should have, but could have.

  3. Scotland 'gutted' but Tuipulotu 'proud' of his sidepublished at 18:52 BST

    FT: South Africa 42-28 Scotland

Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu tells ITV: "We're really gutted to be honest.

"We battled back but the period after half time hurt us a little bit. I'm very disappointed at the moment but I'm proud of the group, I want us to keep our chins high.

"We had a lot of possession in their 22 but didn't capitalise."

When asked what his side need to improve upon after this evening's performance, Tuipulotu adds: "Execution when the pressure's high when you're away from home.

"The period after half time is going to hurt a little bit. We managed to wrestle back momentum but it wasn't enough. I think they showed a little bit better execution at the back end of the game that got them the win."

Looking ahead to Fiji next week, the captain says: "We need to travel well.

"There's been a lot of travel in the last couple of weeks, we need to rest up tonight and travel well tomorrow.

"Next week will be another physical test."

Can you do this? Is this a penalty to Scotland?

I've got no idea, so let's just admire the strength from Boan Venter and the run from Cobus Weise that led to South Africa's second try.

  5. Scotland loss 'self-inflicted' as 'mistakes cost them dear'published at 18:44 BST

I think Scotland will feel that, to an extent, this was a bit self-inflicted. Too many of their own mistakes cost them dear. They were brilliant in the comeback.

What an impact from the bench, fitness levels extraordinary. I thought Scotland were absolutely brilliant for large periods of that game but the Bok pressure and power got on top of them.

South Africa know they've been in a hell of a game and they can't say that often against Scotland.

Still no win for Scotland against the Springboks on South African soil, but the most points the Scots have ever scored against them in this part of the world.

And the most points Scotland have scored against them since the 1999 World Cup, at Murrayfield.

    Plenty of positives to take.

But negatives, too. There's an argument that Scotland gifted one or two of the tries, a feeling of an opportunity missed.

  7. Full-time South Africa 42-28 Scotlandpublished at 18:34 BST

A quite incredible game comes to an end.

Six South African tries to four from Scotland. Some of the finest attacking rugby, on one of the biggest stages in the world.

It's hard to know how to feel after that. The pundits will hopefully tell us.

    Reaction on the way.

    Well, there goes that dream.

Handre Pollard grubbers in behind Scotland's line and Jesse Kriel bounces out of two tackles to go over the line.

That is why they're world champions. The losing bonus point that Scotland were eyeing goes up in smoke.

I have no idea how Scotland have managed to drag themselves back into contention here.

South Africa have managed to clear their lines, but Sione Tuipulotu breaks free now and the 22m is within their sights... but Finn Russell chucks it out of play.

Scotland took a contact there between Bradbury's run and Jordan's kick. If they hadn't, they could have got it wide a bit quicker.

That might be the big 'what if?' moment in this match.

That said, there's been a few. Ashman's knock on in the first half comes to mind.

Here goes Magnus Bradbury now! He bursts free and Scotland are coming forward again! He's caught but Scotland have the numbers wide.

Tom Jordan tries the kick and it looks inch perfect. Kyle Steyn is under it... but he spills it under pressure.

That was so close to the most unbelievable score.

This is just getting silly now!

It looked like Scotland had run out of puff but Ben White sniped and reached for the line, sprawling desperately for the white paint and managing it.

They now trail by a single score. Utter madness. Scotland will leave with at least a bonus-point for their fourth try.

Now Gregor Hiddleston finds space! Scotland are pouring forward!

It's popped to Tom Jordan, can he go into the corner? No, he tries to come inside and pops back to Hiddleston.

Scotland are knocking on the door. This is incredible.

Scott Cummings spots a gap and pins his ears back! He pops the pass to Bayliss, who canters in.

It's superb by Cummings, it really is, finding two soft shoulders and getting Scotland right back in this.

It's another penalty for South Africa. They get down to the 5m, and get another penalty. This time it's taken quick and the green bodies are flying towards the line, keen to get another score and wrap this game up.

And soon, it's young tighthead prop Porthen who is successful.

Another sound kick from a bloody Handre Pollard.

This time, it's a break up the left with Willemse jinking inside and bouncing off Gregor Hiddleston before going over.

    Handre Pollard knocks it over.

I'm told, that's the 100th try South Africa have scored against Scotland. So there's that.
